Go surfing, even when there is no waves. get out there, paddle, stand up, paddle, stand up, repeat. It is a lot to do with reading the wave as well which you will only get better at by being in the water

don't you use your toes to do burpees though? don't think they'd help me. i thought it might of been a flexibility problem or something. even on land i just physically cant do it without using my toes or knees
it's so bloody frustrating!!

Move your hands further towards your waist and do press ups to gain strength and take weight off the lower part of your body (knees/feet) when popping up. Keep your arms narrow and close to your body to build your tris and wider to build your chest.

When you are popping up the back of the board starts to raise up - this is the point you want to start your pop up, if you get the timing right it should effectively feel weightless and as though you are putting the board on your feet.

Also - practice the pop up on land on a gym Mat - anything other than carpet is good. You can practice 100 pop ups in a few minutes compared to a handful of goes per surf

Hope that helps...

Also, if you are really struggling with the explosive strength element try this Over the course of a month and do it every other day ( if not every day)

Week 1
3 sets of 10 reps of press ups on your knees with 30 seconds rest in between
Then 1 mins rest followed by 15 reps

Weeks 2&3
On your toes (full) press ups
3 sets of 10 reps, 1 mins rest 15 reps

Week 4
3 sets of 15 reps followed by 25 reps finishing set

The above worked for a mate of mine when he was tryin to get back in te gym post injury, I'm not a qualified personal trainer and accept no responsibility for you injuring yourself, getting carpet burn or any other form of booboo

Il let you in on a little secret.......your back foot on the board? should be side on before standing. in other words, your big toe and ankle should be touching the board. This will stop you from going to knees(big no,no), setting you up to be naturally positioned. Oh yeah , arch your back with both hands either side of the rail and when your ready to pop up, up turn your back foot and bring your front foot under your chest. Bang your up! good luck.

yer i used to do that ( if you're referring to putting your back foot up first then front foot) but found it to take too long to get up especially on steeper waves. is it a bad habit to pop up from your knees whilst still landing it in one movement?

sorry for the late reply mate. A easy way for kids/adult beginners to learn is this 'step up' approach which is when just paddled into wave or white water is
1. learn to fully arch back.
2. keep back foot side on.
3. bring front foot under chest and stand leaning front shoulder over front knee.(your back foot is already placed and does not require any force in standing)
this will have you up in no time and feeling more confident to this quicker over time. The knee pop up? sorry but this will stop you progressing any further unless you want to knee board. Watch surf videos, surf with mates and ride a board much larger than you.most of all ....have fun.

use the wave.
it may be you are getting up a bit early so stand up as the board drops, so delay your pop up just a fraction. you will find you legs will swing into position easier.

try looking where you want to go ,head lifted ,eyes looking along the top of the wave, then u tend to find timing becomes naturally and you pop up alot sooner ,my favorite saying
take your time
look down the line

On dry land start in the yoga position Upward Facing Dog or Cobra, point your toes out so you can't use them to pop up, and practice swinging your legs under you.

Make sure you face forward (watch TV or something to keep a focus), have your hands under your chest, and really arch your back.

Not saying it's the perfect method but it helped me no end. Once you've mastered that then work on not dragging your feet through.

Good luck
