Il let you in on a little secret.......your back foot on the board? should be side on before standing. in other words, your big toe and ankle should be touching the board. This will stop you from going to knees(big no,no), setting you up to be naturally positioned. Oh yeah , arch your back with both hands either side of the rail and when your ready to pop up, up turn your back foot and bring your front foot under your chest. Bang your up! good luck.
yer i used to do that ( if you're referring to putting your back foot up first then front foot) but found it to take too long to get up especially on steeper waves. is it a bad habit to pop up from your knees whilst still landing it in one movement?
sorry for the late reply mate. A easy way for kids/adult beginners to learn is this 'step up' approach which is when just paddled into wave or white water is
1. learn to fully arch back.
2. keep back foot side on.
3. bring front foot under chest and stand leaning front shoulder over front knee.(your back foot is already placed and does not require any force in standing)
this will have you up in no time and feeling more confident to this quicker over time. The knee pop up? sorry but this will stop you progressing any further unless you want to knee board. Watch surf videos, surf with mates and ride a board much larger than you.most of all ....have fun.
