I have always wondered how long does it take to learn how to surf?

I have never lived anywhere where there is surf.
I windsurf (bump and jump, windswell) Even own a surfboard for behind the tinny.
Have given surfing a go on holidays etc

Did a drive trip to Fiji. The surf camp we were at was awesome (beqa lagoon)

So my question is am I dreaming? I'm late 30's so dont learn so quickly anymore.
I would be keen on going somewhere like a surf camp (fiji?) with a consistent non - lethal break and having a go. Is it do-able?

Those live aboard surfing trips look awesome but I think you would probably need years of experience to make it worthwhile?

Flame away.

Hey bargearse ,

That is a great question!

Late 30's eh , your in your prime mate (well thats what I will always tell myself)
Its never to late to start surfing . Learning to surf is like learning to ride a bike - can be very hard at first , embarresing and frustraiting but once you get it you will wonder what was soo hard in the first place.....

If your in QLD my advice is to go and have a holiday at one of the many headlands that litter the QLD or NSW coastline that has a sandy bottom . Have a few quick lessons with Surfing QLD or what ever and your away , simple as that really! Surfing is not rocket science but simply takes some persistence in the early stages!

Good luck.

PS . surfing is addictive and I take no responsibility for your addiction

Hey,

The hardest parts, and partial solutions are;

1) Paddle Fitness, Paddle Speed, Explosive Power when paddling for a wave - so get fit, or keep fit!

2) Reading Waves, Wave Knowledge - watch and learn, watch the waves, watch others, and watch surf videos.

3) Getting to your feet - you need to get to your feet with good balance... get up smoothly. You can't have too much weight on either rail (fall in sideways), too much weight back you will stall, but a little bit of extra weight on the front early helps get you going...

(4 - once you are on your feet, riding the wave isn't all that hard !)

And I think "3" is still the hardest !! I don't really have any problem with it, but once in a while, everyone stuffs it up !

Might sound basic enough, and look basic enough..... but I'm hard pressed to think of a sport with a harder learning curve at the start....

The trusty Malibu is a good starting point. Forgiving for getting to your feet.... But don't pick up bad habits either....

The wise men above me have it all basically covered but from a fellow learner thought I'd give you some tips too:
-work on your paddling fitness as much as you can as its probably the make or break of catching a wave.
-with your pop up, what I found helpful was doing like practicing it before I went to bed/ when I woke up in the morning. It'll be like a bit of exercise to get you going and definately helped quite a bit.
-lastly when you are catching the wave aim to pop up when you feel the back of the board rising up as thats usually when you are 'on' the wave. Lots of people don't realise it but usually pop up too late or take too much time before popping up.

But probably the most important thing is to have fun because thats what it all comes down to =)

Exactly New Guy.
The other problem is popping up too early, and sinking the tail.
