I?ve got a few issues preventing this from being an easy plan:
1)wife
2)time (about 10-12 days)
3)anywhere but Bali
4)wife
I?m flying into Malaysia, and looking for somewhere to go from there. Its my wife?s first time to indo. She is a total beginner as far as surf goes. I?m trying to get her into it, but its going to require access to a mellow break and a place to rent.
I?ve been to Bali alot, and looking for a different trip. I?m really wanting to go to Sumatra or maybe Lombok. I have no idea from reading these internets which region is going to be the most easily accessible, and interesting for the wife. I understand that nothing is easy to get to like Bali is, but I?m trying to avoid 10 hour ferry rides and such. Nias seems pretty straight forward getting a flight in there, but I?m not sure how that would go over with an almost non-surfing wife.
I?d appreciate any suggestions?.

I was in the same boat last year, but also had a little one. My option was Bali, although I was trying for Lombok. As a first timer you should bite the bullet and go to Bali. For a first timer, it is very westernised, so the mod cons will be there. Pick a nice hotel, not in Kuta. We did Legian Beach Hotel. This will give her a taste of what to expect outside of Bali, but not enough to put her off.
Here is my big tip - I got her (and me) a couple of surf lessons. Yes it was at Legian Beach, but the surf interstructor was ok. The last two lessons where at Cangu. Both place are surfable for beginners even at shoulder high. Both these places gave her the confidence she needed to up her surfing ability. By the end of the 8 days we where surfing middles and airports left and a place just north of Cangu (can't remember the name).
Now she is more willing to try Java or Lombok. That's if you want to surf together.

You might consider Nusa Lembongan (a half hour boat ride from Sanur). Great spot to hang out with the wife, a good range of accomodation, no cars on the island, a great learners wave (Playgrounds) and a few more serious waves, all within a couple of kms. The downsides are the island is pretty small and the waves can get crowded when good.

Maybe surf lessons in Bali then fly to Lombok. Last time it cost me $35 to fly to Lombok from Bali plus extra for boards. You can base yourself in Kuta Lombok and ride bikes to most of the breaks and boats to the rest. The breaks are relatively soft and the scenery is stunning. The locals though are not quite the same as the Balinese.
