Just stay away from the hot spots. Night clubs. Shopping centres etc.
Shop and visit the bali peoples places. Stay away from touristy places where us white folk frequent.
Stay close to your hotel. Eat there. Drink there and swim there.
If you gotta go surfing maybe leave the kids with the wife at the hotel?
Just some thoughts.
Your kids are older but if it was me I wouldnt take my 3 and 6 year old over to Bali.

No need to be scared...
I was there this juni and saw families with small kids both at Bingin and Balangan. On hightide the kids was even out surfing at Bingin. The parents surfed with the smallest on minimals while the bigger ones surfed bu them self. When I say big it was 10 year old girls, and the small ones was only 4 years.
Staying at these places (Bingin, Balangan, and Lembongan) I would never be worries about security of my children.

spot1, We as a family have visited bali five times now,the first time my youngest was 5,we returned june this year ,now he is 15 and surfing all the reef breaks!
We have traveled to other countries and still find bali the cheapest and have the most fun for the family. We missed the 02 bombing by 10 day's and the last by 8 weeks! Although i would not want to be there now our 18 year old is going with a group of freinds feb 09.
If your wife feels unsafe i would stay on the other side of the island nusadooa (spelling probably wrong) or take a boat over to nusa lemborgan (spelling also wrong)
If your staying in kuta,i would stay somewhere low key (small resort) Because they may target a hotel that is full of westerners!Shop during the day and hang out in your small resort at night,however you will miss the great food and the vibe of bali at night.

Go some place safe. ie not bali. I like many other surfers travelled to bali often but i feel the risk outways the gain and haven't been since the bombing. I have a young family and would love to take them there however i am not confident about there safety.

Just had friends return from Bali (Monday). They spent most of their time on Nusa Lembongan with a 8 & 11 year old staying in a private villa with own cook, maid and swimming pool. They said that they didn't feel insecure at all even though they knew the executions were going to happen very soon.
I've booked the same villa next July for the family who are now more than happy to go! Previously the wife would not even consider it!

You can't be scared, that's what they want, just go man.
Keep out of seedy back alleys when pissed in the middle of the night etc, keep with a mate at a minimum, keep an eye on the kids, nothings really changed, it's only our perception of safety has been shaken. Bali is the same paradise it always has been.
The rules for travelling in a foreign country always apply, it would be silly to think Bali was any different.
Indonesia is a country of 225,000,000 people, there are only about 30,000 extremist ****wits and the govt is working on weeding them out, they don't want any trouble either.
