I'm doing a project in school about surfing in australia and i could really use some help because i can't find anything online...

What are surfing tricks/moves that are invented in Australia, and by who were they invented?
Are there any particularly australian surfing terms?
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me

Here in WA, there is one particular move Perth'ians are famous for: dropping in. How do you do it? When you see a wave and the person with right of way looks like they are paddling, engage in a staring contest with them. Then as they paddle, you do too and when they pop up, you do too and take their wave. To finish off the maneuver, when you end your ride, simply acknowledge them with a 'sorry mate, didn't see you there'. You'll see that this maneuver is quite famous, a lot of the pro's have actually picked up on it and use it to much success i.e. Dean Morrison a few weeks back.

"What are surfing tricks/moves that are invented in Australia, and by who were they invented?"
I invented surfing with just one surfboard. Before that, people used to hold a second one on their head. I was like "dude, you're on the wave already. ditch your other board!"

I invented claiming. It was a very quiet introverted sport until one day I ended a wave with a very vocal "that move (ie. my own) was sick!" and a very visual fist pump. Fortunately the assembled crowd agreed.

I also invented the surf check. Everyone used to blindly walk into the water at the same spot each day like lemmings, until one day i stopped and said "hey, I'm just going to look at the waves for a minute in case it's better down the beach". I was a social outcast for years for taking that brave stand, but look at it today. Every day at every beach around the country, people are sitting in their cars or on the sand dunes looking out at the waves before venturing in, no doubt taking a moment to consider how much I have changed their lives for the better.

"Are there any particularly australian surfing terms?"
* "Locals only, f**k off"
* "What's ya postcode c**t?"
Also Australia is the only country that calls a surfboard a surfboard.
* Americans call them Aquatic Plank
* New Zealanders call them Bro's Ironing Board
* Brazillians call them Medina's Magic Love Stick

A great documentary containing genuine surfing conversations is "North Shore". Focus on Occy's dialogue.

If you need some pics of me for your project, just google "surfers going off". I'm usually the 3rd or 4th image in

Failing that, you could visit one of those things called a library where you'll find about 100 very well known books that have rather relevant titles along the lines of "the History of Australian Surfing". Could be a good starting point.
