Would you wear this? I wouldn't for the simple reason that it won't be any use when the shark attacks the bottom of your board in the first instance! Apart from the fact that you would be laughed off the beach.

Quote: In January, the research team spent more than four days testing the new wetsuit designs off the northern WA coast. Mr Jolly said in one encounter a tiger shark circled a dummy covered in the "cryptic" design, which helps make the wearer less visible to the shark, for six minutes before deciding to attack a dummy covered in traditional black neoprene.
"We have had a handful of engagements like that. We need to do more. All the early evidence is that it's working," he said, adding that testing would go on for many years and they could not say the wetsuits provided fail-safe protection.

4 days of testing, im not sure I would be happy with those odds

Lets hope its all good and works well. Maybe if they could get it to blow bubbles and play music it would be even safer

Sorry that's just being negative. Lets hope it is a step forward

They should call it the KookSuit.

There have been 5 shark related fatalities in WA since 2010. Over the same period there have been 371 fatalities on WA roads.

I wonder if I could get a $20K Government Grant to paint peoples cars to make them more visible to other motorists....

I'd be more inclined to spend my hard earned on an electrical deterrent, they're much cheaper and a lot less Elton John than the KookSuit above.

Who gives a f#ck what it looks like. If it turns out that it works good sh!t.
I guess if your going for a surf and trying to make a fashion statement then it's not for you.

As for your stats late starter, ever thought about the number of road users as opposed to the number of ocean goers???

Wilko would froth on this!

surfbang.com/

Seriously if it works - I'd look like a tool and lower the odds. Looks like surfers could get away with just the board print.

Again though, same as the electronic devices, if a bus size GWS is hungry.............

Or even more pertinent - the number of hardcore surfers and divers (seeing as they are the most likely ocean goers to become shark breakfast) vs number of road users.

Would be interesting to actually see the comparison.

With a well written proposal I'm sure you could.

All that funding and its been tested for 4 days? Katana has been testing his unit for over 6 months out of his own pocket and no funding?

Fail.

Four days of testing with 'deadbait', and im led to believe that sharks might react to our emotional state of being (fear). If sharks do
'home in' on our impulses, are the dummies a waste of time?.

Yeah that's right. Road users as opposed to ocean goers. If someone's going to make a comparison to road deaths compared with shark attacks per year think about it logically. How many hundreds of thousands of people drive daily? How many people go in the ocean daily? There's a massive difference and its just a stupid comparison ya

One of the suits just looked like a spearos suit (so the sharks can't see you apparently). There was a spearo on the south coast who had 2 close GW encounters wearing a camo spearos suit, reckon the Noah's are aware enough to know you're there no matter what you're wearing. As for the stripes, it's been done and tested before, with whites from memory (though may have been a captive white). Didn't work.
I loved Hugh Edwards comment for the news, to paraphrase it went something like "these suits were tested in the 70's and found not to work, but they did help inspire confidence in water users".

Hugh Edwards is my neighbour and an all round great guy, still dives and he is turning 80 in a week or two, what a guy! He has some great stories and told me he just fends the sharks off with a wooden pole when he dives!

I wouldn't wear the suit but I would consider having that design painted on the bottom of my board if it was proven to work.

I think the only reason this could possible work is that the sharks piss themselves laughing so much they take off

Hmm a dummy dressed in drag huh!
Last time i checked - sharks can smell you and hunt from electrical impulse I.d..
They are covered in vibration sensors, which means they know every food source they eat - by the movement signature it makes in the water.
Just as like nuclear submarines have prop signatures...
Ever heard the old saying stay still amd dont panic ??
Sometimes they get curious...
When your Numbers up - its up Mofos ;)
Ps. Dont be one of the 300+ a year who die in car accidents before you make it to the beach :)

this thing will eat anything with a heartbeat or a sniff of food
supposedly if you see something like this it is best to stay as still as possible and cross all fingers that your not dinner.
