Hi,

This is the first time I'm buying a surfboard (I was borrowing a 6.8 fish before and a 7'4...I'm a beginner) and I was just wondering what I should look for when I'm checking out a used board?

This is the board I'm looking at:

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bondi/surfing/6-11-mini-mal-surfboard-in-excellent-condition-220/1041781364

I know to check for big dings, bad repairs, yellowing...but is there anything else?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

It looks like a dog shape to me. That template is ugly. Just my opinion. At beginner level it probably doesn't matter much anyway, don't remember. My first glassed board had more water weight than foam and glass weight, big round rails and a multi-coloured single fin with a pin tail.

Hey mate this is a bic board, my housemate used to have one. They're made of a thick plastic, are nearly bullet proof, and won't get dings or cracks like a conventional surfboard.

At that price I'd say go for it, it should have enough volume to get your wave count up, and if you progress in your ability, you should have no probs getting your money back if you were to sell second hand.

Legions right. Board looks like a total pig but it's not going to matter.
It'll be easy to paddle and will get you through until you need something decent

Agree with the above, horses for courses and this is the horse for your course! Will do the job well until you are ready for next step.

You liked the template chrispy? Didn't know you worked for bic. I had a quick look at their website and fair to say they are a strong competitor for those Starboard or Naish or whatever surfboards that Adelaide guy was flogging.

Anyway it's irrelevant. Looks like the OP bought it.

Although said board is sold. One thing I look for is a suspiciously white band on the board. All glass boards go yellowish, so a whiter band could indicate a big repair.

One side might = crease.

Both sides might = snapped.

I wish,I would love a job in the surf industry....I just find it amusing that you and your follower....had to say it's a crap shape, but hey go buy it your just learning.

Sure it's it's not a hp board, that is easy to see. But why say it? then say go buy it? The first part was no help to his question.
I would be more,yes or no....easy.
Plus I thought your follower was funny/no.real opinion

Because at beginner level the limiting factor will be gross motor movements and time in the water, not the board. And I had to point out it's a dog so he/she is ready and prepared to cop it from their mates.

Depends how you look at the statement, I got that its not a board your going to want to keep for ever or progress into, but its a board that's going to get you up and going. But from your statement I got , i needs a snickers........

I think the point is that most beginner boards are total pigs. Usually thick high volume things that won't do anything other than go straight. But that's actually what you need when learning to stand up.
Wish I still had the lazor zap I learnt on.

I'm with Vibes..when your a learner you need stability..IMO a single fin is better starting point than a thruster anyday just to get your balance on an object moving on moving water.
A BIC is an option, but take the side bites (side fins) out and run it as a single for a while.
