Some interesting comments at the end of the article.

Heres another video

Showing the ESDS unit. I must add im not for/or against these devices. I found the videos interesting so thought i would share.

Also agree with the comments at the end of the article that a swimmer/surfer is a bit different to guttered fish bleeding in the water.

Yep, i hadnt seen it on here so i put it up in case people missed it.

IMO in the second video it appears to discourage the sharks and turn them away, only one attack from all the encounters

i don't agree with SS but the first video seems to show the shield electrode and bait on the surface That's what it looks like and if that is the case the Shark Shield must be fully immersed in water to work properly

Not sure about that video and its conclusion from that event

Nah, I'm not that ugly mate.

Anyhoo, these videos, while interesting, are not a really valid experiment. There's a huge difference between a surfer/diver in the water and a fish carcass.

Like I've said before, most shark attacks have historically been due to exploratory bites. A electronic deterrent can be quite effective at stopping these, as opposed to stopping pure predatory behaviour.

When you but a semi-gutted fish in the water, the shark has other senses to work on and comes in for a feeding bite, not an exploratory one. It smells the fish, smells the blood, visually see's the fish and moves in to feed. If anything, the electrical signal (albeit an uncomfortable one) will just tick off an extra box in the shark's "mind" to tell it "this is food". It's different when it receives that electrical signal from a surfer/diver.

Think of it this way; I don't put burning things in my mouth because I know it will hurt...but a hot slice of a pizza, sometimes I cannot resist and I get burnt but still keep eating.

You can't dangle a bleeding fish in front of a shark and expect a shark deterrent device to be full proof. The shark will make it's own 'mind' up as far as risk/reward is concerned. But if a shark senses that highly uncomfortable electrical pulse on a human, something it traditionally doesn't associate with food, well, that exploratory bite might just not seem worth the discomfort.

Pretty much. Seat belts are not full proof but hey, I still like to wear them.

Personally, I'd rather have one on if a big white suddenly appeared.

I'd be happier with wings

Tying a swimming pool chlorine tablet to your non leash leg in a nylon stocking is supposed to work according to some Mauritian surfers. Anyone heard of this? i cant find anything on google, but kind of makes sense as sharks are supposed to have a great sense of taste/smell and I would imagine they dont appreciate the smell/taste of chlorine.
