I was online yesterday to check out a coastal Holiday House a friend of mine is looking at renting over xmas. I was using google maps and noticed a couple of quiet fickle surf spots I grew up around and still frequent were named on the map.

Not only that, but they were rated out of 5 but some clown referring to himself as a 'local guide', who had posted dozens of photos of these spots on a rare decent swell. As if tagging on on google maps and posting photos wasn't enough, he's also divulged his thoughts on the best swell size and direction and tide to catch this fickle place firing.

He has done the same for a half dozen other 'relatively unknown' and novelty spots nearby, and I've spotted him posting and naming these spots on social media too.

Clearly this bloke is selling out locals for 'likes' or the the perceived acceptance of an online community, while the rest of us in the water suffer as our local is swamped by the incompetent kooks and hordes we expect to see at Circus Breaks like 'fat crowded northern break' and 'fat crowded further northern break'.

I know that nothing this day and age stays secret for long, but ffs whatever happened to etiquette?

Etiquette is dead for people like that but not everyone - best to roll with it - you could get on board and post your own thoughts on the best conditions.

Another lost craft thanks to the net is the ability to read weather maps. Good old synoptic charts.

Yeah spot on, there are patterns of weather that always go unnoticed and are clear on the synoptic charts, most like the generic forecast that tries to tell you a bit of everything - I personally love these forecasts as they give the masses the slip!
