I recently got back from a quick run through California and Mexico. Got good waves, but had a hell of a time getting my surfboard onto planes without getting stung with some form of tax.
I know Qantas don't charge for boards, so long as you're underweight. But all other airlines i flew with it cost me... Pretty frustrating considering i was usually almost 15kgs under their weight limit.

The Airlines that Taxed were:
Delta
Northwestern
Mexicana
Click

All of them charged around US$70 except for Northwestern who hit me with a whopping $105 to get my board back to OZ!

Just wondering if anyone knew where to find a list of airlines who have introduced this tax? Or maybe we should start making our own one on here

Yeah Garuda tried to hit me with that one in october last year. The rule had just come in though... and the dude behind the counter was a good bloke... So i managed to talk my way out of it.

Just sorta trying to get some sort of list together of what airlines are charging... would be really helpful to everyone i think

I heard a rumour that British Airways have banned or are trying to ban surfboards all together? Anyone know if there's any truth to this?

British Airways Surfboard Ban
So it looks like BA, formerly one of the most board friendly airlines around in our experience, are going to rule themselves out of the surf market by completely banning boards on all flights from the 6th November.

We're a little nervous from the announcement below that this is something that other airlines might copy onto. If you're flying with boards in the near future, no matter who it's with, probably worth clarifying the situation...

"Sporting equipment we do not carry (effective from 6 November 2007)
Due to the large size and handling complexities, some sporting equipment cannot be accommodated through the airport baggage system or within the aircraft hold. Therefore we no longer accept the following equipment at check-in as part of your sporting equipment allowance.

hang gliders
windsurfing boards and sails
surfboards
kayaks or canoes
pole vaults
javelins "
