Yes, yes and yes. Salmon Holes Beach is beautiful. Ask at one of the surf shops in Albany. It's a bit of a walk around from the car park but well worth it.
I lived in Albany for 5 years and this was my favourite spot...beautiful and great waves during Summer.

i disagree, with fuel prices pushing 1.50 a litre i concur that asking of good spots that arent in your local area is a f***** great idea to get some good foreign waves.

unlike some of the yob's i see down in bunker bay driving BMW x5's and such we cannot afford to be looking around our fantastic coastline, of which i have spent a few years travelling and exploring in year passed.

if someone you can contact for free knows where i can surf when i go away... i think il do it

BUT... if you have a boat .. i am jealous, i cannot find a wave worth paddling out to lately

Bakes my friend, there is a big difference between asking for details of how to find spots and posting on the internet so the whole world knows. I take it you've never lived near the beach and surfed the same break every day. How would you like it if 50 homeless bumms came and pulled out thier swags on your front yard just cause some clown posted on the internet that you had the best grass in town.???

As for all the years you've spent lookin for waves and still cant find anywhere decent to paddle out, your not lookin hard enough. Your in WA bro- the most surf infested coastline in Australia!!!
And no you dont need a boat, just eyes and and common sense............

Its quite simple really, just P.M. someone you met on the site and ask them for a personal directions if your still stuck. As for BMW's, thier aint nothin wrong with that as the peckin order in the line up AAALWAYS gets sorted out.

Good luck- Kearnsy

haha funny you should say that kearnsy - i wouldnt mind so much if some bums pulled up on my grass.. i would feel some empathy for them - as it was only a few years ago i was the bum on someone elses grass because it was so nice.
i lived the life of a true adolescent, loitering around area's where grass was both green and plentiful!
but these days i manage to live in a beautiful home .. anyone can improve and travelling was where i learned that you can do anything if you truly want to.

the boat reference was a gag though hehe sorry.. i am still out there trying it was more an attempt to slur at the current wave crisis perth finds itself in. I have only lived here for 2 years but something about this summer seems particularly flat and lifeless.. as I cruise passed leighton, cott, scarbs every morning on my way to work the sea is limp and pathetic.. a constant reminder that the ocean breathes and moves... but occasionally 'dies'

its all good, im surfing mandurah friday .. down south on the weekend perhaps and got a good lineup on monday tuesday organised. hopefully the early mornings arent too rough :) g'luck to everyone with their surfing and i hope one day i will ask you for a good spot kearnsy mate.

Damn right Bakes11.
And I have a boat. Hey, I've had heaps of memorable uncrowded great surfs from my boat and I wouldn't be without it.
Matter of fact, I've surfed alone quite a lot - a bit risky I guess , but beautiful.

Nice wave. Looks like it just might break left out on the island on a huge swell.
Had a sundowner sesh there all to my self one late arvo.
More really good waves around Albany are Nanarup over in the corner - rips when it's on, and Cheynes Beach Point is a killer when the swell direction's right and big enough. I had one of the best surf's ever there a few years back.
About as close as you'll get to a real right hand point break in W.A. I reckon.
The inside section is magic. Only 2 other guys out when I surfed it.
Sandpatches closer to Albany scares the hell out of me. I've seen too many sharks out there. And on a big swell it's just too all over the place for me and the power of the waves out there are downright dangerous.
I've had Middleton Beach really good a few times.

You'd be surprised how many right hand point breaks there are on the south coast.

Accessibility is the main problem though.

True ? They tell me Blacks Point is apparently a right hand point ?
Do you know if that's right ?

I'll save you the 7 hour drive, extremely rough track, water crossings and lack of any facilities whatsoever to tell you...

no. no waves there. just a big, flat boring lake. Go to Geraldton instead. It's closer from perth, plus you can do it in a 2wd.

also, Google Earth can be your enemy.

take Bremer Bay, for example: www.google.com.au:443/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode&q=no+point+breaks+here&ie=UTF8&t=h&om=0&ll=-34.395286,119.403695&spn=0.00641,0.01133&z=17

From the map, it would look like there would be a right-hand point break here...

Well, I can pretty much guarantee that if you took the 8 hour drive from Perth with the expectation of finding a Noosa Heads type wave, you would be sorely disappointed to say the least.

heh, sort of

It's surprising really, how a headland on the east coast almost guarantees a point break, but around Albany similar looking headlands almost never produce a point break. I think the water is goes too deep too quickly around Albany, so the waves don't really wrap up against the points.

Winge. My turn. Damn right !! Lets get real. So far since friggin' May of last year I've put up with the absolute pits with the woeful Perth metro " surf ".
After 300 lousy on shore 2 foot crap surfs I came home this arvo totally peeved.
This aint surf, this is rubbish.

Have you tried windsurfing?

I took it up a year ago so I had something to do in summer in Perth.

It rules.

Hi DL. No but I've thought about it. I may give it a go.
It hasn't interested me mainly because it looks like it's point A to point B and back again. But true, it would keep me out there. cheers.

Imagine the power when you bottom turn on a bowly 6' wave.

That's what it's like when you are windsurfing, except instead of being confined to the face of the wave, the whole ocean is your skatepark.
