This morning I went to 3 of my local surf shops to get a few tail pads for my new boards.

I could'nt believe it. Not one of em even had a bloody board let alone deck grip.
When I asked the clown behind the counter if they selled deck grip, he looked a little puzzled and replied "what?, for a skate board" ........???? WTF

WHat is this industry coming to. If I wear surf clothes and did'nt surf does that make me a surfer????? I think not- KOOKS!!!!

ANyway share your thoughts..........

We went to Karrinyup to get deck grip-$50.00 Fricken bucks. But the strangest thing was the manager came over skipping and had a gay looking hat with a feather in it-WTF is going on.
Went to the Boardroom instead and got the grip from the Hottie there-mmmmmmmmm

Yep, It's a sad state of affairs when a surf shop does'nt have deck grip let alone surfboards, these days most of them are just surf wear shops, no wonder the line ups full of kids on lids!!!!

Every now and then I like to go into these so called surfshops and ask embarrassing questions about boards. It really confuses a lot of them. Try it yourself sometime

i just got a custom shaped stick by a respected shaper for just under 600 rods in obs pk recently.. dont buy from china.. what do they know about local conditions and what is their care factor about locally produced products, zero is the answer. For me it was an infinently more rewarding, and educating and cheaper experience, plus you are putting coin into the local scene.

build one

SurferStu's onto something though I've got a couple of friends that had custom made one around the $500 mark with leash and fins, not a bad deal if you ask me

Our local surf shop in Mudjimba sells boards, fins and other hardware because the bloke who owns it is a surfer. Unfortunately for him though there is almost no margin in this stuff. The only way he can keep the shop open is to sell the clothes. This is where the money is. We pay 60 bucks for a pair of boardies that are made in China for about 5 bucks.
There are heaps of places where you can get a good board for under $600. Believe me, nobody is getting rich off selling surfboards.

Call me a cheeep bastard if you will but I think that boards are like cars. Buying new is a good way to throw money away via depreciation. There are obvious benefits in buying custom boards, but if you have been surfing for a while and know what you like / need in a board why not buy 2nd hand?

Surf shops are businesses! They exist to make profits. It has always been the same. i remember going to Metro Maddington and looking at a surf shop there and wondering "where are the boards?" that was when i was in highschool about 16 years ago.

Theres no better way to buy boards than from the guy who made it though, and that is where I have the got the best individual advice...
