Hi all.
I am looking at getting at getting my kids aged 6 & 7 a softboard (like the ones surf schools use) each for chistmas.
Has anyone got any kids who use them and what sort of size should i be looking at?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks Oz

For kids as young as that, I doubt they'd need anything over 6'. I've seen the youngest of groms learning on sub 6' fibreglass boards on Perth beachies, so seeing as a softboard will offer vast amounts more floatation, a similar length softboard will be fine.

Hi Oz, I got my 5 y.o daughter a 6'10 G-board, they are not cheap but very good quality. Many surf schools use this brand.

Here's the win for you though. I take her down into the flags and she rides waves no probs, when she's had enough I paddle out the back and get a couple myself fully legally in the flags as well. It's unreal in Summer, the surf is crowded but not where I am.. Hahaha.

Yeah I once saw a guy on a tiny (5 footish) kid's board. It was a foam board, like literally foam, like the old eskies back in the day. Had this terrible looking moulded foam fin that looked more like the dorsal fin of a dolphin. Anyway, he was pumping on it between the flags. And if he lost it, it was soft and safe.

That's why good ones like the g-boards are the go. Stiff, not a bad shape and surf surprisingly well. Theyd go better with stiffer fins but for a couple of sly ones while the grom builds a sand castle perfecto!

I bought my kids Elnino boards both 6 foot and my 7 year old loves his but my 10 year old (she is tall) its a bit small and challenging.

I'm trying to find a 7 footer now but i don't like the shape of the softy;s in that size. May just let her use the NSP 760 again.

Dont know what you have in your retail stores in WA but i picked up a softie for my daughter a couple of years ago at BigW for $70. Works fine, ive even ridden it for a laugh. Obviously its not as refined in shape as the more expensive ones but fine if you have a low budget.

Hey PPig back in the early 80's there was an annual surf comp called the foamie classic held at Cottesloe and we all rode those boards. I had a GS foamie and it was unreal for those hot windless small days. There was a few of us who used to ride them at Trigg point on small days, had a blast! My parents have still got mine in their garage.
