anybody got any suggestions for a short board for a 44 yo 77 kg 5'8 intermediate surfer. We have mushy waves at our locals. Generally two foot in height. Been surfing a 6'0 magic door. Will get another one in, but would like to hear what other people are surfing. Quite liked the look of the CI neckbeard

Heard a lot of good things about the scifi as an allrounder, evo is going well for blokes I know as well. Clearwater also have a lot of great shorties.

Neck beard is sick I got the big square tail one they brought out the pulled in tail a bit later but for smaller mushy surf I called the neckbeard best off the shelf groveller.... Than I got a vanguard,,,,, than an evo now i don't know anymore

Yep you can get the carbon wrap construction customised, however it would be an Australian made one which retails for $1399.
You can also get a normal PU construction that is cheaper, not epoxy like the carbon wrap.

I would have to check the extra glassing cost, an extra 3/4 patch would solve the problem.
They might not charge anything or only a small fee.

Compression dings are a lot about the softness of the blank as opposed to just the glassing, you can put all the glass you want on a soft blank and still get the compressions.

A small amount is character on a board and standard on most PU boards, chronic compression dings are a sign of other issues with the construction of the board.

IMHO opinion hit up a local shaper, there are a few I can think of that I know use good quality blanks and the amount of local blokes riding them is testament to the construction and how well they are shaped, I know some guys that literally re-order the same board every couple of years from the same blokes.

You could get a local custom for just over half of that price, that gives you a bit to spend on good new fins, bag and put some coin towards a trip ha ha

Id recommend speak to Ron who does VON boards.
He is now in Vasse, but can do runs up to perth. From surfing local perth he has some great shapes to suit beachies thru to smoking south waves.
He does PU, epoxy and varial foam. depends on ur budget but all way cheaper than 1400.
He is shaping for some great surfers now, proving he is up there.
Strength wise seems great balance of flex and strength. for example i have been kiting on one of his boards for over 3 years now and sure it has some compressions under feet (which most like) but still going strong.

sure there are local shapers here in perth, just research...
should get my new sled in few weeks, one of his new shapes. hangin!

Varial foam is ridiculously priced. I can't wait until the get the price down so I can try it.

How does the JS Blak Box 2 compare to the V3 rocket. It sounds like a a few reviews focus on the wave having to be steeper and a better shape for it to really perform, whereas the Blak Box 2 is a board for any occasion.

Box 2 is also a good board but they are different to a V3. Buying a stock or racky is great when you know what you are after and you can see and feel it in front of you, or as mentioned you know specifically what you are after. If you're not really, really sure of what you are after the you should talk to a local shaper and he'll shape what you need for where you surf regularly in the conditions you surf the most. Outside of that you'll play an expensive game trying to reach surfboard Nirvana.
