I took a two beginners and my grandkids surfing at Scarbs this morning - just pushing them off in whitewater and keeping them out of the way of the local crew. Next thing I know I'm getting busted by the City of Stirling lifeguard for conducting an event without having a permit.
I know I've pissed off the local surfschool for helping a few beginners (including my grandkids) out with their surfing - at no charge, just a community service). You know, mates helping mates. Basically just giving them some pointers, keeping them safe and making sure they know the rules so they don't get in the way of the experienced surfers. I must be doing a good job if the surfschool wants we kicked off the beach for doing this.
But basically the lifeguard said that he has no trouble with we for helping people improve their surfing, but because I arranged to meet up with people at the beach through Facebook (closed group) then I need a council permit because this is an arranged event.
I'm an old relic from the '60's where you arranged to meet your mates at the beach and we all went surfing and had a good time. Now when I go to the beach and help out a beginner surfer or two, I cop grief from the local surfschool and get busted for not having a permit. Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong?

Seems like a good use of council time, surely the surf schools operators can't be that trivial, doesn't reflect well if true.
public space surely you can do what you want, it's a bit upsetting to hear though.
Obviously they can pull some sort of safety card but being there pushing grins into one footers is not a crime

How many kids were you teaching?
Not that it matters .
You should be free to do as you please.
Screw the surf schools.

Yep, If you aren't taking any money then you should be able to use the beach in my opinion.

My 2 cents, for what it's worth is,(re;Surf schools) if you are doing it for money then you are doing it for the wrong reasons .
