Hi guys, I'm heading to Bali in a month I have surfed canngu a few times because it's close and convenient. I would like to ride a scooter there just because of the convenience, is this a bad idea? Is it hard to get there road and directions wise ,I've never taken much notice because I'm in the back of the mini van.

i only stop for the cops if there standing in the middle of the road and there"s no way to get around them

Its an easy ride mate,check out the Dues Temple on the road into echo beach,both day and night the live music can be all time,I'm heading over next week can't wait.

and now the local boys drop in all the time too

When riding a scooter over there I hide behind every bemo or truck i can when approaching an intersection, also slow down and indicate that you are pulling over so the pricks think they have you than dump it with all the awesome power of those bikes

On the way to canguu u can check out(with a bit of detour) batu balong- old mans or berawa

If you do get stopped, don't pay more than 50,000Rp (you will also help your cause here if you don't have a wallet full of notes).

I usually keep a couple of 20,000 notes under the seat for these types of situations so the wallet doesn't have to make an appearance.

One note of caution - you are generally not covered by travel insurance if you are injured on a bike, but don't have a corresponding Australian motor bike license.

I've been taking the same IDR with me to Bali for the past 4-5 years. I have an Aust bike licence but have often wondered if the travel insurance would still cover me if not carrying a current IDR. Anyone know?

In Aus you can ride a scooter though on a Drivers license. SO if you were on a scooter would you still be covered

I would say so if it was 50cc, I would check that tho. Insurance companys would try and wiggle their way out of that if they could.

So even when I thought I was covered, I wasn't. Doggie is right: Insurance Companies look to avoid any risk.

Keep in mind that you are NOT covered as a driver, or a passenger, so if you were to jump on back with one of the 'transport transport' guys and have an accident, the sky is the limit with your medical bills.

Considering the recent stats of 1 Australian dying in Bali every 9 days, its just not worth the risk, especially not when you can hire a mini-bus and driver for a whole day for less than the cost of a carton of beer back home.

Well I thought I'd check my policy through the ANZ credit card:

ANZ:
We do not insure you for any event that is caused by or arises from:

> your participation in motor cycling, unless
> it involves a hired motorcycle with an engine capacity of 200cc or less; and
> you are the driver; and
> you hold a current Australian motorcycle licence; but
> we never cover any event that is caused by or arises from motorcycle racing

So the question is, does a scooter fall under the definition of "motorcycle"?

I would check with ANZ to confirm what they mean. I would expect that it would but they word it so its a bit confusing.
Reading that I would say that you would need a mc licence, even tho the law here says that you can ride 50cc on a car licence.

I just checked the policy I normally use (complimentary insurance that comes with a gold credit card) and got a shock when I read the exclusions:

(g) Motor cycling:
– outside Australia (Unless you are riding a
motorcycle with an engine capacity of 200cc
or less and hold a motorcycle licence which is
valid in the country you are in);
– in Thailand and the island of Bali

the wording in that last part is a bit concerning "...and hold a motorcycle licence which is valid in the country you are in"

So the question is, does an international drivers licence qualify as a valid licence for the country you are in?

Just checked my current policy that I purchased the other day thru WebJet for Indo next month.

Words with Special Meanings

"Moped" or "Scooter" means any two-wheeled or three-wheeled motor vehicle with an engine displacement of not greater than 50cc.

"Motorcycle" means any two-wheeled or three-wheeled motor vehicle with an engine displacement greater than 50cc.

WE WILL NOT PAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES IF:

9 Your claim arises from being in control of a motorcycle without a current Australian motorcycle licence or you are a passenger travelling on a motorcycle that is in control of a person who does not hold a current motorcycle licence valid for the country you are travelling in.

10 Your claim arises from being in control of a Moped or Scooter without a current Australian motorcycle licence or you are a passenger travelling on a Moped or Scooter that is in control of a person who does not hold a current motorcycle licence valid for the country you are travelling in.
