Hi Guys

You might already know this but Ripcurl are trying to organise an event at Gnaraloo.

There is a petition against it through this link:

www.thepetitionsite.com/1/save-gnarloo/

There are so many reasons why this is a bad idea. You will have your own....but think of the negative impact on the already fragile environmental system that this comp will bring. It will have international exposure which means that we will have MANY people travelling here every year. That will undoubtedly have an impact on the environment and the safety of everyone that sails, surfs or kites at Gnaraloo. Can we afford to risk one of our last remaining "untouched" treasures??!! I am all for tourism. But this needs some serious thought.

Please spread the word around. Even if it does not stop the competition it will bring the issues to the attention of the people that matter and hopefully have them addressed.

Thanks!

This may sound strange, I as an tourist, can with no doubt agree on this. I think it is a very very bad idea to expose Gnaraloo to the mainstream world by shooting a international competition like this. One of the amazing things about Gnaraloo is its extreme isolated and of course the fact that it is not crowded and mainstream. Even though Gnaraloo is in no way secret and it is easy to find it but because of its remoteness it is not crowded. I could easily imagine that a international competition could change that, so....

SAVE GNARALOO....

Cheers

Here's my 2 cents worth, happy to be corrected.

The owner of Gnaraloo is in the process of upgrading the accomodation at the Homestead compound, so I assume the contestants etc will be based there.

3 mile camp is already a cess pit, with the 'Piss' fence, food scraps and litter left by the hundreds of visitors there.

The reef and track at tombies have already been severely degraded by over use.

The air strip is already regularly used by travelling surfers

I assume the contest will be in winter as this is when conditions are best for surfing tombstones.

Unfortunately if you're trying to save Gnaraloo you're about 20 years too late

Try further north, there are still a few special spots

no need to be corrected i think your pretty much on the dollar there.

after travelling around australia and seeing a hundred other beaches .. literally untouched by man or surf competitions.

there are amazing places, gnarloo i think is a bit too commercial already, its like these petitions to stop the smiths beach development and all that .. as if its not too late for them.

i'd love for the comp at gnarloo to be stopped but dont you realise that it will just be moved to another spot where they can try and market it to make a dollar.
the event organisers surely care little for our beautiful beaches .. they may as well inject some "precious" american currency into the coffers and help to build the area up for our use -- post surfing competition

Crap on all you like about havin a comp there, if they do have one and thats a big "if" they had one,I just cant see the problem the WCT had one @ La Jolla in mexico we all remember and it didnt seem to do too much to that place which had been a secret spot untill then. Get with the program people!! Save smith as its over develloped & should be left as is, but Gnarloo is private land anyway and we are lucky to surf it anyway!!
