North island can be fickle any time of year but there is usually a bit of consistency on the Coromandel Peninsula with a good choice of beachies/rivermouth breaks and sensational beaches and scenery for the family. Gisborne always has a good wave somewhere but it's a mission getting over there I reckon. My fave is Northland where you can jump between, say shippies on the west coast and taupo bay on the east coast but it is really really unpredictable and a long drive. When I have travelled to NZ in the past I normally took a mal and a fish but now I am a bit older and not so keen to lug boards all over the countryside I would probably just take a big fish kinda board that will handle a bit of size if raglan was on but would still catch a 1ft wave if thats all you can find for a few days. Hope this helps.
