Got my hands on two very cheap brand new epoxy 9" longboards. Unridden they look great and the shape and the thruster fin set up is what i was after, problem is in the thickness and rails. The rails are around the 3' in the middle and there is very little taper towards the tail or nose.

Rode one of the boards yesterday and it went ok, but way to much volume in the board. Given its thickness it was great on the nose but didnt need that much volume.

Given the boards werent that expensive I am thinking of de-glassing the deck and reshapping better rails and taking some of the volume out of it. Bassically thinning it out. What thoughts or advice do people have on this type of project.

I reckon you are opening up a whole world of pain doing that. Whatever you paid for them I am sure it would be cheaper to go and buy a new blank and do your thing with that and sell the boards you have if you don't like them so much.

My thoughts too, thinking i might ride them and adapt, somethinf in theory looks so simple...

if you were to do it though, what do you think?

probably not advisable.

In effect you building a board from scratch, but using a really expensive blank.

If they were only $260, why don't you just buy a smaller board from the same supplier? Don't know how much it costs to glass a 9' mal, but it could very well be cheaper to buy a new one and certainly a lot easier :)

If you are absolutely convinced that you need to reshape these boards, maybe an option would be to only de-glass the top side of the rails.

That way you could reduce the rail volume without affecting the bottom shape, plus you wouldn't have to re-glass the entire board, only the top side of the rails.

If you do that, make sure you have enough overlap between the new glass and the old glass.

Maybe sell one board and with the money buy a blank and start fresh. If it turns to s**t you still have the second to fall back on. Rebuilding sounds like a drama.

You say they are epoxy boards - surely you can't de-glass an epoxy board? Sounds like way too much effort? Sell the board and start again.

If your "epoxy" boards are surftechs you definiately shouldnt do it, they are sandwich construction. You can seriously weaken it if you do. For all the hassle of deglassing and reshaping it's easier to start from scratch and build a new one (pe/pu).

Hi, about 10 years ago I tried Re-shaping and re-sizing a 7'6 gun to be a 6'8. It took so much playing about with weights and ballances within the board that I ended up glassing it up and getting all the boys to sign it as a 21st "card" for a friend.
It is way to much effort for a board that will probably never perform as it should anyway, not to mention a waste of $$$.
I'd sell the boards and use the money to start from scratch or buy a 2nd hander off the rack...

'ditto'

sell the boards, or 1 of them and start a blank from scratch - how much time and money can u be bothered wasting on a board that no doubt will not satisfy you once your out there using it.

variation on answers given already

sell one board which will give you some coin to get a blank and maybe some necessary tools and materials youll need. keep the other board handy for measurements/outline/comparison etc. And in the meantime try and learn as much as you can about how to do it as theres stuff which can go wrong
