Anyone riding a SP around Perth and Down South? Feedback?

Based on reading I've done I'm interested in this board but have not had a chance to try one as I can't seem to find a demo board.

I'm trying to find a board to suit Perth conditions and the longboard wave breaks in Bali i.e. Medewi etc. The idea is to find a "longboard" replacement that is short and easy to travel with.

Any out there for sale? Think I'd be looking around the 5'6 - 5'10 range.

cheers

I havent surfed a SP but do like short fat wide boards in small condinditions.

Have you looked at a mini simmons or mid simmons design, should give a similar paddle ability and better small wave performance than a mal. Not sure who builds them around perth.

The SP looks like the same concept, short fat concave and minimal rocker with full thickness foil thru out to give float. Videos of the MS look good. I am thinking of building 5'10" for small perth beachies for those one turn wonders but would luv to fly one down the line at medewi...

Pretty sure you can get demo boards of these ugly looking things down at one of the surf shops in the main street in Margs. They do look like a fun alternative for summer

Don't be afraid to check out Katana in Ozzy Park. I believe he does 'Hybrid' epoxy boards too - Dave I believe his name is. I guess if you love the SP shape that much I'm sure he can do something in that outline. Probably pay the same for a brand new one of his, versus a hand me down SP...

Thanks all for the input. Good points by all.

I'm not stuck on the SP by any means, I'm open to options as you guys have pointed out. One board that does grab my attention is the Surftech Takayama Scorpion and I came across similar shapes by Miller but he is on sabatical from shaping until next year.

Unfortunately my budget doesn't really allow for me to pick and choose, if it did I'd have plenty of options I reckon.

I got an SP in 6'2. Im 100kg though. Has def replaced my mal. Paddles onto everything. Couldve gone couple sizes smaller but the float lets me paddle onto knee/hip high - great board for summer. Hard to believe you can fit so much float in something so small.

Still getting used to it - using the speed, but love it.

Ellobuddha - what do you reckon - based on your experience, would a 6'4" SP for a 110kg bloke surfing small summer metro beach breaks?? What are they priced at?

thanks

There's a BIG fish in the second hand rack at Katana that'd float you no worries GPA, worth a look.

A 6'4 will float you no worries. If you can demo one obviously best but for me a 6'2 is heaps big enough. They have such a fat ass until you see one in the flesh its hard to describe. I reckon theyre great.

Thanks Fellas,

I currently ride a 7'3" 7S SuperFish XL that at 3" thick and 22" wide has 53lt volume - and I love it... and keeps me off a mal. I'm just forward planning for the next board...

Yeah - the SP's have a radical arse on them!!

Reminds me of the YouTube clip Big Booty Bitches [worth a look if you want a laugh...]

cheers

I ride a 510 sweetpotato and i am 6~1, when i started riding it i was 112kg but now im down to 104kg. funnest board ive ever had for shoulder high and under surf. i was out of the water for seven years so i was on a 7s superfish that was 7'3 for about a year and it only took me 2 surfs to adjust to the potato and i have never ridden the 7s again, the potato can catch any wave that breaks!

G'day Pro346,

thanks for that - hard to believe a 5'10" would take that weight (my weight!). I was thinking of the 6'8" but may have to review that...

I've read mixed reviews about the firewire construction and dings/creasing - how's the deck going for compression dents and any other signs of 'wear'...?

Cheers

Hi gpa

I could ride a 5'8 they have got that much volume, I only got a 5'10 because there was a bloke in the shop at the same weight riding a 5'10 and he convinced me to get it, i was looking at 6 to 6'2. I have ridden it about 80 times, re waxed it yesturday and not one deck dent, there is two minor ones on the bottom( hard to see) Its rapid fire construction, if it was a poly board it would have dings all over it!

I got a sweet potato last week and absolutely love it. Ridiculously fun to ride. Iv got a 5'4" and I weigh 80 kg. Has plenty of float. Not heaps but deffinately more then my 6'4" short board. Deffinately worth getting one.

Hi Guys,
Long time reader – first time poster.
I demo'd a 5'8” SP at the weekend and absolutely loved it. Super fun in small surf.
Timmiddo – I weigh 68 kg and normally ride a 6'0 from what your saying I should probably get 5'4” . Do you find it still catches the waves really easily?

I think the same about the 5'4" - feels way to small but the firewire website says its got about the same volume as a six four, 5'8" felt really floaty

Im looking for a new quad as well, this might be the way forward in small waves. I have been looking at a 7S fish as well. I would really like to try both. The 7S is a proven design and it seems the SP is the same. I guess the question is the 7S is much cheaper @ $700ish and the SP is around $900+. Anyone ridden both?????

I'd be interested to 'hear' what he has to say re comparison of the two boards myself - as I'm very happy with the 7S and was looking to go the epoxy next time... but the SP definately has me interested... especially given I've only read good comments on them in small-mid beachies (where I spend 90% of my time).

Some interesting tweaks, colours and materials to the super fish coming in a month or two. That said the current model has been universally popular and you can score a great deal on most sizes whilst stocks last.
I will see if I can post a pic of new boards.

Great; thanks - I'd be very interested... my mate has had three boards 'looking for the one' in the 2yrs that I've my 7S. Some people still rag them, but anyone who has ridden one says that they are good [fun].
