I was watching some video of me surfing my old man took the other day and noticed that my pop up is rubbish.

watching it back it looks like my back leg gets on the knee before fully popping onto my feet, but when I'm actually doing it it feels smooth and quick.

on the weekend i tried to focus on perfecting the pop but it all happens so quick and before i know it, im on my first turn down the line and I have no idea what my pop was like.

It doesnt seem to effect my surfing that much.. but it could be alot faster and definitely could look alot better! haha

ive obviously been doing it like this for years.. how do you retrain that muscle memory? whats a good way to practice it? or should i just keep surfing the way i do?

Video is a great way of seeing how good or bad you are at any part of the wave.

I never look at vids of myself, I like to think I rip <<jokes

You can Lay your cover on the ground and practise getting up quick. Just lay on it like your board then practice popping up.

Having surfed with a broken toe for too long this is my problem area. I'm so scared of kicking it that i often just kook it plain and simple.

Also i find when i get tied i struggle more and was wondering if any particular exercise would help

Or just plain old fashioned pop ups in the living room

Anything that mirrors the movement. So boys, get ready to do some push ups Working your core is another good thing and even the balancing balls because if you think about it, 'popping up' is basically you balancing on a board on an unstable moving surface. Other exercises include lunges (like you are compressed when up on your legs) and even the cable machine at the gym is good because depending on how you pull the cables with your core, it's exercising that twisting motion you do when you go for turns.

You can also try 'push up jumps' - where in a push up position you 'jump' and tuck your legs underneath you or in the position just before you are standing up. Bear in mind, this is just an exercise I have thought up on the spot during lunch break at work

Strength and flexibility. Kino again, doubt she would have any trouble with "the pop"

I bet using roller blades is too, but it doesn't make it a good idea [}:)]

Agree with newguy, core strength helped me a little bit... and working on my girly arms
Still, when I started I had a few lessons, and I just could not pop up the way he was telling me. Even now I still get to my knees then I put my back leg up, then front. Bad trait I know, but still working on doing it a more efficient way.
The good ol' poppin up in the lounge room is sorta helping.

Mate I reckon relax. I'm far from the best surfer around, but my opinion is the wave counts for a lot of it. Sometimes on small crap waves I pop so slow and do nothing and I feel like a kook surfer. then at other times, a critical wave comes through with a bit of size and steepness, in close proximity to sharp reef and somehow I subconsciously plant the front foot and drive the front rail and I have no idea where that initiative came from.

What I'm saying mate is just relax. I bet the video was taken on a **** wave. If you're getting turns in down the line, just have a laugh mate - it's fun!

Also one thing I've done is be proud of my style, even if it isn't the best. My mates sometimes give me advice and reading between the lines I realise they want me to surf like taj. Instead, I just wanna have a laugh on a wave. My adivce is don't over think it, surf as much as you possibly can and have fun, don't over-think.
