New laws in SA will see all water users required to wear a pfd3 when using any personal water craft- surfers, windsurfers, kiters and kayakers will all be affected.
The time is now to make a stand and do something about it !!!!!!
This is a ridiculous law- people need to be responsible for their own safety and before this legislation we have all been able to look after ourselves. Make some noise and let's get this changed.
If SA let's it happen the chances are other states will follow their lead......
Similar to PFD2, but doesn’t meet the Australian Standards Association colour standards. These are designed for high-speed water sports such as water skiing, kite surfing, aqua-planing, operating PWC and sailboarding.
For PFD Type 3the approved standards are:
AS 4758.1: Personal flotation devices. General requirements in relation to a PFD classified as providing level 50 special purpose (50S) buoyancy; Personal Flotation Devices Type—3 AS2260.1996, as in force on 1 January 2008; any other standard or specification approved by the CEO by notice in the South Australian Government Gazette.
The safety equipment requirements apply to the majority of boats. However, certain types of boat are either partially or totally exempt from these requirements. Some of the more common exemptions are summarised below.
Canoes, kayaks, sailboards, kiteboards and similar small, unpowered boats must have for each occupant
* a PFD that complies with the appropriate Standards and is worn at all times * suitable bailer (unless the hull is permanently enclosed) * waterproof torch or lantern while being operated during the hours of darkness.
To add...they say we're behind the times in WA, but I can see these supposed legislation changed were introduced in September...bit late for a stand of protest me thinks
Dont be fooled this is happening, the kite boarding community is against it as much as surfers. There is some more info on the SAKSA part of the kitesurfing forum. It has links to all the relevant info and government documents.

Only those that can't read are the ones worried...
Good work Pooman and Elmo... I heard about this earlier in the year and the info I got through SLSA is that the law DOES NOT COVER surfers / bodyboarders.
I must admit though, the position on SUP's is a little unclear... which I find mildly amusing.
