Forgive me if you already know this, but being "newguy" you might not - lightning is enough to make me run far from the water. Last place I want to be is the single thing sticking out of a flat surface. I've been known to recommend leaving the water to people who look like they're still learning nearby. So this is my online equivalent to that.

Haha didn't think of it that way Legion. If I've decided to go for a surf I don't really give it a second shot. Kinda like anything I do really. Surely the chances of getting struck aren't that high? Although I was a single bloke on 1 bank while everyone else was packed in the line ups.

Have a google search for "golf lightning". I reckon surfing in a thunderstorm is probably at least as risky as playing golf in a thunderstorm, if not an order of magnitude more dangerous.

In the late 70's me and a couple of mates got caught at princetown near the 12 apostles, we hid under a ledge in some rocks with another group of guys. We were surfing a 6' cranking bank not drop of water out of place with a lightning show out to sea, then all of a sudden it moved in so fast, 6 of us paddled in by the time we got to the beach it was striking within 50m. After 10 min. of hiding in the rocks the other 3 guys got impatient and decided to go , one of them got hit when they got to the top of the ridge. He's dead. You have more chance of being hit by lightning if you don't get out of its way.

I didn't know him, I think he was from Warrnambool, we went up about 30min later and a guy sitting in a car told us, I've been caught out a couple of times down here when a s/w change is coming through.

Stay clear of SUP's as well, surely the 6ft carbon paddle would be a great conductor.

I was thinking the same thing myself during the week s4f, think it was around Tuesday that i was considering going for a paddle but decided against it for that very reason.
