Any thoughts on extending the reefs between trigg and watermans for better surf?

extended reefs = better surf...

better surf = more surfers packing onto the break...

im a advocate of smaller waves with fewer people personally.
i like the idea though, im sure there is a solution to the common madness that seems to be located throughout coastal australia.

but sure, extending the reef sounds like a good idea to me.

Artificial reefs are used in the USA to stop beach erosion as well as calming the shore break. There was a bit of a push years ago for one of cities as it makes the beach break less of a slammer and more kid friendly. I think the local council thought it was a joke and spent money on putting fences in the dunes. Cables was a bit of a waste with the swell shadow from Rotto - the more north the better

Good Question !! Heaps of potential there but unfortunately it will never happen for two reasons :
1 : West is left...and East is right... ( hander )
2: Councils and all the red tape rich buggars will never fund it.
BUT !!.... get interest from dudes like Richard Branson for a chain of global indoor
surfing venues / resorts and you're rich like him.

Apparently the cables reef was suposed to be twice as long on the right and the left was indended to be further developed but the government pulled the cash half way through the gig. With the state gov splashing around the cash at the moment ie upgrading the art gallery spending budget from $250000 per year to 10 mil maybe now is the time to put the preasure on about artificial reefs and while we are at it maybe put presure on the militant freo port authority and safe sand tracks before its to late.

beastsurf - odd that you have detailled knowledge on both government art funding and also a opinion on local surf breaks hehe
il assume for now u read it in the paper... the jury is out though haha
just kidding.

yeah i agree though. state government is throwin its money around .. 10 mil on art, who needs art.. if government was so concerned with childhood obesity and delinquent crime why not create alternatives for our youth to experience life in a safe and harmless way.
imagine if there was a lazy 10 mil chucked into promoting healthy eating and marketing idea's on getting the youth into the surf instead of breaking my housemates window to steal his playstation.... do u think that anyone listens though??

Does anyone know if anything more has been done for the proposed artificial reef at back beach in Gero.

Be good to get more breaks that are good but I don't think you will ever get away from the crowd problem.

Ha Ha I must addmit it does seem a bit strange. Does anyone know of a group or an organisation that would assist in contacting the sports minister to get a view from the government on theese issues.

i dont know anyone really who deals with the minister for sport and rec.

i have a friend who is high up in the DSA. they organise events dealing with issues similar to these.. maybe i can ask some questions. maybe il find a lead.

interesting point though. could be worthwhile looking into it. maybe something could get done about some issues at hand - i know we all talk about it on forums such as this but what action is taken at the end of the day.
im only new to this but im interested in changing certain things and having my say, making a difference if i can.

problem of the northern stretch of perth coast is a marine reserve!

i allways thought that a cheap way of making the artificial reef was to use the same method used to protect the dunes and control dust ie the orange flexible fencing. if you anchored it to the sea floor, let the top float freely and had fence runs at 5m centres in the shape you wanted the littoral drift of sand would mound up at the fencelines to create a surf break or improve an existing one. it would help at places like Toms at north beach - but the marine park issue is problematic. You could call the break fencelines.

Next Tom's sesh I'm packin' the van with a load of extra pavers we've had in the garage for months. Shove 'em on the board and when I get out to the line up, drop 'em down to the bottom.
If you guys see a perfect right with me on it next May, you'll know how I did it.
