See this guy at left. That's what I looked like only heaps worse when a young boogie board rider went straight into me while I was walking out over the bank at Trigg Beach. Here's what happened.
I took off inside and scored a good right. It was a really shallow tide and the sand bank was only hip height if less. I could easily walk back out on the bank to get out. A young boogie board rider took a left and came screaming towards me.
He had plenty of time to see me, and what happened then could have been avioded. As he got pretty much right in front of me he did a re entry , hit the lip , rolled over and steered straight at me. He put his Boogie board up like a shield
( more like a weapon I reckon. ) Then he and his board hit me full impact in my face as he came crashing into me at full speed. There was blood srteaming from my nose, and my face was covered in blood. I thought my nose was broken. I headed for the shore and he followed me.
The bone on my nose was soft and crumbly and it had been damaged but luckily my nose was not broken.
I spat blood out for a few seconds , waited for a while and I felt ok. I told the Boogie board rider that I thought I was going to be ok. He then paddled staight back out into the surf, no apologie and not that I expected it but he showed no concern what so ever.

get used to that sort of thing
as a bit of a tip if you are paddling out and someone /thing is coming at you always head for the white water and leave the open face for the rider

Boogie boarders can be the biggest idiots sometimes.

I was surfing an old 7" single fin at scarbs once, and a boogie boarder dropped in on me. When I called the wave, he looked around and saw me, then headed up the wave to pull off. Since he was pulling off, I did a pump to accelerate and get past where he'd crumbled the wave.

However, the boog-nut was actually doing a reo and he timed it exactly so the nose of my 10kg board hit him straight in the side of his head. When he surfaced he did that classic "duhhhh" boog-nut face.

I told him not to drop in because it's dangerous.

Then I spent the rest of the day snaking him .

imagine if he was riding a board with 3 fibreglass fins...
understand your pain- but never get in the way of anyone on a wave

my brother always scares the **** out of me when im paddling back out when im out with him..
trust him, showing off.. cuttin it up, then bang.. hits me, not once or twice but several times over a period of ten years.

its true it does happen, but i dont believe it's always the fault of the person re-entering the surf.
sometimes there has to be a bit of common sense like when a eski lid should be leaving the zone in front of you but does a rio and gets bumped.. of course it was going to happen, can you avoid it? yes.. but it still happens.

in the words of ben cousins;
"such is life"

This is just another classic reason why they make surfboards out of glass my friend!. They actually hurt back if you use them as "a shield" .

At the end of the day unfortunatlly your mate on the lid was probably tryin to show off and likely had no intention on actually hitting you. Tell him to get stuffed, or crack him one back and lets get on with it shall we boys!!!

Hi Spot 1. Utmost repest but " get used to that sort of thing " ? Never.
I had no chance what so ever of getting out of this guy's path.
But he could have avoided it . He saw me but didn't re direct.
Me ? if I had 've been in his shoes I would have pulled out.

When I was younger I had my first custom board made. First time I took it out I had a esky lidder drop in on me, I bailed so I didn't hit him, bad thing was my knee landed straight in the middle of the board putting a big dent in it. Everyone has a right to be out there (except goat boats) just should'nt be dropping in.

You do have to watch yourself at these crowded beaches I've had lots of near misses with crew that aren't watching out. Some people have no respect out there.

What about all of those nsp learner boards and greenhorns standing in knee deep water looking dumb as you fly off the lip towards them. They are the problem. Bodyboarders suck and so do 97% of Perths surfers as they can barely stand let alone crank afew turns on any solid wave face. Get over it and get in your car or on a plane and find your own wave where the only thing you have to complain about is the lack of crowd and shark to surfer ratio.

Ay twitchie, is that really what you do ? Fly off the lip towards learners standing in knee deep water ? Sounds pretty dangerous .
I saw that happen once a few years ago. Not nice. A little girl was walking out on
the sand bank. There was a surfer where he shouldn't have been. In the swimmer's
area, you know the one between the flags. The guy frightened hell out of the little girl as headed straight at her. The waves were only small but he could've hurt the little girl badly.
As for your comment about Perth surfers ? Pity you feel that way.
Funny though, I've seen plenty really HOT Perth surfers and just about all of them
are freindly, good people.
Actually, you don't sound too happy. You might be better off getting in your car or on a plane and go somewhere where you can find your own wave.

yeeeeeehh.. not all of us paralell your skills twitchie
some of us stand and pop airs but do not "fly off the lip towards them" .. i think you need to understand there are various skill levels with most sports/hobby's and activities .. i appreciate it when people are learning and often paddle around watching and staying out of the way.

hey loner that wasnt you on the wave trying to get close to that girl for a bit of a perve?? ..

better get back to work.

Its easy to get frustrated at times but at the end of the day there only waves and you can always paddle back out and get another one. I don't see the need for aggresion angled towards the novis.

haha yeah i know. who perves on chicks when they'r surfing... although i find with the amound of crowded waves and lack of swell there is not much to do apart from that particular observatory action

when will we be blessed with a few more waves..
i was surfing redgate last week.. me and my boss had it all to ourselves.. wat a beautiful sight

NEVER SURF AMONGST BOOGIE BOARDERS!! Im offended by the lot of you!! bodyboarding LIKE surfing has people that may not be as respectful as others in the water. i enjoy both sports, this is because there are heavy waves out there that just cannot be ridden on a standup, like cyclops off of esperance there are bodyboarders paddling into that break, this has not yet been down by stand ups, show some respect to our sport...myself and my brother (a stand up) frequently surf together hitting a few secret breaks we know on our own and he has NO trouble surfing with me!! It sounds like some of you are Inexperienced just like some other Inexperienced bodyboards which leads to INJURY...Parko and alot of other pro standups respect our sport because it is inovative and we can hit lip and go aerial like you guys have never seen!! you will notice not once will i insult your sport cus most bodyboards enjoy gettin out on the standup aswell just like myself!Take it easy fella's and enjoy hittin the waves ON ANY TOY YOU CHOOSE!!!

Agreed Track but read the first post. We are taliking here about an instance where, the Bodyboarder very likely could've avoided what was a very dangerous, even dare I say fatal incident. If it so happened that it was a " stand up " boardrider that did exactly the same thing, there would be no differentiation.
No offence intended Track, and I myself had a most enjoyable surf amongst 3 boogie board riders out at Rotto . But they , like most reasonable surfers as yourself, behaved in an entirely responsible way. You might agree that there are some unwritten " rules " out there in the surf. Most of us follow them. But when this guy hit me at max speed, believe me,there wasn't a thing I could've done to avoid the collision.
Perhaps I could've titled the original post differently so as not to infer wrongly.

Yeah, hope it happens.
I can't remember a time so long without waves in WA. I'm hangin' out for May / Winter. Seems there's always good waves in May. I'll be surfing my local break a lot - Toms North beach. Paddle over and say hi. I'm the guy with the white boardies , black side stripe, and black Triple X spring suit.
I'm off to Lanno for 4 days Feb 17. Hope I score Hole In The Wall.
Check out my Blues songs at www.reverbnation.com
I'm the 5th guy down - photo / local artists / Perth W.A. ...hint D.S.
