This has been around for a while.
the local Sunshine coast rag today printed the stats for the last 12 months.
People over here dont turn an eyelid as it has been well established practise.
Recently moved from WA to Sunny coast 6 months ago.
The surf is better and geeze its nice to feel relaxed in the water.

I believe reducing large shark numbers is the only effective means of reducing the chance of shark attack.

You're wrong. Let me tell you why.
If you want to flip a coin heads three times in a row and you've already got a two in the bag, do you have a lower or higher chance of getting three in a row next toss compared to your mate whose only got one head?

Your odds haven't changed. They are still 50/50 on getting head next toss.

It only takes one shark. Having fewer sharks won't help that stat.

You know one way to be 100% guaranteed to not be attacked? Don't go in the water.

I think it is terribly sad seeing photos of the 4.7 m (or whatever it was) tiger shark being caught.

That would be a fairly old fish that is of reproductive age (and it was pregnant) just killed because it might (but more than likely would not) kill someone. I just think that is piss poor.

I'd rather not surf than rid the ocean of large sharks to keep me 'safe'.

Life is about risk management. Weigh up the risks vs the benefits. If you don't like the risk, move on and find something else to do.

More people drown each year. If it was about saving x number of people, focusing on that would be far more effective than the 1 person per year nailed by a shark.

+1 mate I was embarrassed and my kids were distraught watching that pregnant tiger gaffed and dragged in to the boat I take a calculated risk when surfing, diving with my family I know we are part of the food chain for me the ocean is much safer than sending them to a catholic school

^Yeh that's fair enough. It might only take one shark, but if there are more sharks you'd be more likely to meet that one shark.

Nah i dont know of any but that is the problem with nets and drum lines protecting our beaches

Not to mention all the other by catch as well

Yep stats on catches are published on the DpI website.... Easily found on google...

I read that as Zuke was chasing stats on Shark attacks by Tigers. Catch records for drum lines and nets are as you said listed.
