Fishies, I am new to this as well, but have been around windsurfing for a while. The same question comes up over there as well.
The people in the know will usually tell you to go big. Those who have been around for a long while and who have forgotten how hard it is to start with will tell you to go small.
When I started windsurfing, I started big and didn't regret a moment of it. I learnt the skills well and eventually transitioned to a smaller board with no problems. I got maximum time on water with the least frustration. Now all I need is some wind.
I am going the same way with surfing. I just brought a 7'6" mini mal. A rough, but solid board. This is the size that my coaches have recommended and hopefully I can get the skills I need down pat with the most enjoyment and the least frustration.
It also means I can catch (hopefully) the smaller waves and, again, get maximum time on water. In the end, go with what you feel comfortable with and not what you think you will look good on.

it depends if youve surfed before!!
If not around 6'8-6'10 will be awsome for learning and is also good for the larger waves
If you know how to surf and the waves arn't to big then around 6ft would be good
