don't think so. the major reason i think is that they can catch a lot more waves a lot more easily and a lot futher out than a shortboarder, annoying your average shortboarder. if the unwritten rules (i.e. closest to the peak or first one to their feet) of surfing weren't invented and every wave was a party wave, nobody would think twice about mals until the odd one takes you (shortboarder) out. old school longboard surfing just looks cool. but if you're a longboarder and can combine the old and new schools of style of surfing into one wave, then that's just showing off.

I think its a state of mind thing.

I have both in the quiver and if the HP is on board the music is up loud and heavy,the log on board and its mellow music.

And that reflects the way I surf the session.

So what moves do you refer to because they all would have been tried on a longboard well before they where tried by a shortboard.

The biggest difference between a longboarder and a shortboarder is longboarders do it with style!

I think that the ladies on longboards have the best style because they seem more graceful than the men.

Does it really matter how you ride a mal.
Its all about surfing the wave and having fun.

Recently I've managed to catch some waves in a 43 foot outrigger (yes 43). 6 man outrigger. Super old school !!

13 boards. 6'2 thru to 9'4. After watching my neighbour hitting it all year round my idea of surfing was out the door. A board for all occasions now is how i see it. I surfed with my cousin yesterday, he was on a fish i was on an eight footer, both enjoying a day out in very average surf. Obviously come winter, board choice will change, but while these conditions persist then anything other than something with a bit of meat or length ( i'm sure my missus whines about this too) just does not cut it for a big fella like me.

OK very cool,funny thing is about 7 years ago we were the few, today at the same breaks and world class ones at that the shortboard numbers have decreased and longboard increased.I maybe getting old but my eye sight is still on the boobs[}:)]
