Ive been looking at boards for a few months now. Going to shops and doing a bunch of research online.
I mostly ride a JS black box 5'8 19 1/2 2 1/4 running 26L but now looking for a new PU board with maby more volume with extra paddle or just jumping ship to an epoxy for extra paddle/float.

So far i have narrowed my off the rack boards too:
Rusty Neil diamond 5'7
Firewire spitifre 5'6
Hypto krypo 5'4
Motorboat too 5'9

Or pushing some money into katana surfboards and seeing if they can shape a scud or something that wuold suit my wieght/height. Intermediate 70kilos 5'9

Any help much appreciated as like most of you lads i dont like forking out 800 or so on a new board that doesnt
ride the way it looked/sounded like it might. Surf shops should have Demo boards available in the near distant future.

Welcome aboard Mike. Katana does demos, give a Skud a whirl and see what you think.

Sweet cheers smicko might have to give it a crack as ive nerver surfed an epoxy and it seems a very mixed bag in regards to PU vs Epoxy.
So many different points of view but none conclude which is better but i guess its up to the person and the type of waves their surfing day to day if were lucky.

Mike there's a massive difference between epoxy and compsand construction. Chalk and cheese.
Take one for a blat and see what ya reckon.

I currently ride a 6'0 blak box and I'm just under 90kgs. It's my go to board for anything around Perth. It struggles a bit in bigger surf as the tail wants to spin out, but that's not a problem you're likely to have in the metro area.

I've had a hypto too, but picked up a skud from Dave at around the same time. All the cool pros and hipsters rip on the hypto, but for me the Skud was a magic carpet and far better suited to the breaks I ride every day.

My blak box is on it's last legs so I've been looking for a while at replacing the old girl. I've been liking the sound of the Blak Box 2, which is the same board with a sl

My blak box is on it's last legs so I've been looking for a while at replacing the old girl. I've been liking the sound of the Blak Box 2, which is the same board with a slightly pulled tail and more refined rails, so it goes better when conditions get good.

In the end I went with another new Skud, I loved the last one and figure I'm going to get a better board from a shaper who surfs the same waves I do.

I pick it up next week and will keep you posted...

You can get a skud in PU. I am the same weight as you have a look at my review of the 5'8 I got:

@latestarter- Yeh the black box rips i love it i surf it from mushy summer waves to head n a ahlf down south or bali and handles fine but anything bigger i seem to catch the nose sometimes. Its had a solid few years so think its time to find a new board to get stoked on and hopefully progress a little. I just want a board with a bit more paddle but with similar performance coz i find im missing alot of waves when theres not enough push. statring to get pritty keep on the krypto coz the speed will help alot.

@bene313 NIce reviews mate do you still ride the revo? Isnt that skud an epoxy? If i get one im thinking epoxy just to see how they ride and maby
get used to the extra float.

Sold the JS.

Yes my Skud is epoxy. It is light and has great flex/spring. For comparison, the Skud feels much more like a PU board to me, than it does a Tufflite board.
