I'm off to Indo in late May for the season - will be coming back in Sept. Can't wait. I plan to spend most of my time in Sumatra.

Jetstar have some cheap flights on offer. You can go one way for about $170! But it's carry on luggage so wouldn't be able to take my boards. You can pay another $20 to get 20kg allowance but I reckon they'd charge you extra for boards.

So I can either go Garuda for about $800 with 2 or 3 boards or go Jetstar for $350 with no boards and buy them in Bali.

Has anyone bought their quiver in Bali? Is it cheaper to buy there than in WA?

Also, has anyone extended their visa while in Indo? I plan on getting a two month visa and have heard you can extend it through an Agent while in Bali. I'd prefer to do this than leave the country.

Hi Stanos

Mate go the cheapest airfare and pay the fees to take your boards.

The charges are all in the small print! Its not that expensive.

Just be carefull if your goin to Bali cause you can only take in 3 boards ant one time. However you can bribe the customs officer if he finds out, I've paid $50 aussie for each extra board in the past.

Have fun

If you are planning on heading to Sumatra it is also worth checking air asia and tiger for cheap flights. I flew them both last year and it worked out to be a fair bit cheaper than anything else i could find.

They both charge about 30 dollars for boards for each flight leg, so if you fly Perth to Kl, then KL to Padang it will be about 60 dollars each way. Apparently Air Asia sting you really badly if your over 15kgs (around 3 boards) but otherwise it is all good. I think tiger still has 30 kgs of sport equipment for a fixed price.

Have fun, I am jealous!

All the cheap airlines are ok with boards, including Jetstar. Ive flown them all enroute or back from Indonesia.

Like said previous, a small charge per board bag (take a single multi-board bag) on Tiger and Air Asia. Sometimes you can get away with more than one board bag but best buy a multi to be sure.

Jetstar, your boards are simply part of your checked luggage weight limit. If your boards and other checked luggage are going to be over 20kg, buy additional weight credit online (much cheaper than at airport).

On my ment trips I manage to get 2 boards in multislim cover, along with the remainder of things cant carry on board, well under 20kg, probably about 13-15kg.

The key is to get as much as possible into your carry on luggage. Travel light, remember you hardly need to take any clothes - 4 pairs of boardies and a 4 t-shirts. If you need more you can buy there super cheap. I always buy a few t's from the locals and also leave a couple from home behind.

So... with Tiger & AA its possible to not purchase checked luggage, just get as much in your carry on & pay for sports equip at check in. With Jetstar you need to purchase checked luggage as your boards are included in this charge.

Pull in.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll take the cheapest flight I can find and deal with the luggage costs at the counter. Trying to read the fine print on the Jetstar website is impossible.

I'll be flying to Bali at the end of May and will spend June east of Bali and July and August west of Bali and will be taking 3 boards.

Next question - visas. Has anyone extended their visas through an agent in Bali?

When you get to Bali there's a good chance you'll meet some aussies there. One of them has to know someone who lives there and can guide you in the right direction. Last time I was there i met a guy who was married to an Indo lady and he renewed his visa for a fee(basically bribed his way through it!) whenever it was due. I'm pretty sure you can do the same, just gotta find someone to help you.

Other alternative is leave your boards at a surf shop and fly to Singapore for a day!! That always works
