Anybody got any tips to generate speed on small(waist high-ish) waves?

I have a 6.0 thats pretty thick in the middle so catching the waves is a piece of p... but once on them the board struggles(or i do) to generate speed.

I have a cheapo skateboard that i practising pumping my arms and legs on, but kind need to know the technical apsect of when EXACTLY to apply weight/release weight etc.

cheers

keep your knees bent, use the steepest part of the wave and get the whole "pump" thing happening. How heavy are you?? seems like a rather small board. You said that its rather thick but actually its the tail width that will make the most difference. Im 84 kg and ride a 5'10 fish with a tail width of around 20" and have no trouble riding a waist height wave with speed. If all else fails, get a mal lol.

i'm a lightweight at 74kgs and short-ish at 5.9. the board is a hybrid and does work well. its definitely my technique as some days i can generate speed with ease.

My position on the wave, i.e. in the pocket, is definitely in question. Not old enough nor lazy enough for a mal, yet!

in reply to the question, im nothing like the guy asking the question, im 115 kgs 6'6 tall and in those type of waves I love to ride a 6'10 walden fish.. i think its better on reef breaks than beachies for some reason.. but the amount of speed you can generate on that size wave just by pumping up and down the face is nuts

i don't doubt its my technique and other blokes my size riding smaller/thinner boards can do it.

Reckon its just my intensity(or lack of)... practise practise practise...

if your a beginner and 74kg get an 8ft minimal. You'll have more fun, you can still 'pump' the wave, but probably won't have to because you'll generate more speed because you'll get into waves earlier.

yikes, didn't realise asking questions on improving my technique would get me labelled as a beginner!

I've been surfing since i was 7yrs old so have "some" ability. Was just after alternate ideas as i figured my style could be improved somewhat. Seems to get lazy every couple of years.

What i had in my head and this is for small-ish, beach breaks only.....

Unsurprisingly:
1. Catch wave in the pocket
2. lean forward
3. take off at an angle
4. crouch
5. rear leg cocked and bent forward
6. rear foot located over the fins
7. Exaggerate pumping for the first few waves
8. think down at the top of the up strokes
9. look where i want to go next

As for the amount of pumping, well that seems to be dictated by each wave and as i surf mostly beach breaks this changes constantly in a session.

so how come you can't pump the wave if you've been surfing since 7 years old! shouldn't even be thinking about it by now.

Anyway its more of a rocking motion than pumping, just need to push more water through your fins.

Your board still sounds way too small, even if some guys ride smaller boards than you. Every time I get a new board I go up as size due to age, fitness and the little amount of time i actually spend in the water these days.

i weigh 76 kgs and ride a 6'1 rounded pin, perfect for grunty little beaches. have feel on a demo board if you can get one, or borrow a mates.sounds like you've got yourself a sea anchor.
a mals a sure way for you to go backwards i reckon.(no disrespect to the ol boys).

The answer is simple: get a fish.

At 76kg, you'd need a board about 5'9" long and 20" wide.

I have a "7S Super Fish" which is 5'6, 20" wide and 2&3/8" thick. It is seriously the BEST small wave board i have ever had (and I have owned a lot of boards).

The high planing area, low volume and flat rocker make fishes the ultimate small wave speed machines. I really don't understand why anyone in Perth would ride anything else...

Hey Meerkat, maybe try to keep the board moving by changing directions thrusters need to keep moving or they stop. When you get to your feet work the board by raising and lowering the rail like a seasaw either side of your feet. Feel the speed brother. Mals are good for soft c**py days athough they do have a certain amount of soul to them and put a differant spin on riding waves.

Get your skatey into a half pipe and just rock and roll back and forth push down of the board just as you get to the transition where the wall turns into the ground once you can do that and get higher and high instead of loseing speed try it out in the surf pretty much doing the same thing pushing at the bottom turn and youll find youll have heaps more speed and going fakey on your skatey gives you more control on your front foot give it a go.
