pricey boards....heard really good reports but for the price, you would think they were indestructable. But there not.they snap like any other tuffy and ive only seen 1 delamination on a firewire . factory error? for that price -was refunded but not for snappages.
if your loaded and want the best....go for it, for me? i sussed them and still reckon you can get a good local custom and rackboards that stand out as good as them any day.

Theres a 6'2" X 19'X 2 3/8" Firewire at longboards scarborough in the second hand rack. The board looks as if its brand new, who ever owned it before didnt surf it much. Worth having a look at with $675 on it, could save you a couple of hundred bucks for a newish quality board.

Thanks for the feedback....I am currently riding a Byrne Tufflite Mullet that has rekindled my passion for surfing after a brief stint on a SDR custom 7'6" fungun that i totally hated, feel ready to try something a bit shorter and narrower but still easy to paddle as the fitness level aint what it used to be, also like the look of the 6'4" Byrne tufflite channel bottom for those offshore barreling days down at Surf beach.

7'6 "fungun", geeeez, what the hell is that? did you surf that at triple head sunset in hawaii? how about a Webber Afterburner? handles all ages, weights and still surfs like a short board and its straight off the rack. OR see your local shaper for some excellent advise........

how about a DELTA antman from margies.....or a grubb?
these guys have been here for years and can point you in the right direction and possibly reccommend a shaper close by...........

I own a 6'2" Futura, and it is honestly the best board I have owned! I am 95 kg and go through board like there going out of fashion (I generally get a new board every 3-6 months depending on when they snap), but this board seems to be holding up really well. I have ridden the 6'4" Alternator and didn't like it. I have also tried the 6'8" and same thoughts. I am really interested to know how the 6'4" Quadraflex goes. The Firewire boards don't feel as bad as most expoy boards. I have never liked epoxy production board before, but this is the first board that I would say actually performs better than any Poly I have ridden.

Anyway most dealers have demo boards, get one out and see for your self.

On another note, they are better for the Environment, and are working on being able to totally recycle used boards.

Hasn't Steve Del Rosso gone to the Goldie?

I heard he sold his APS shaping machine to Base surfboards...

Hey DL, SDR here mate! Na I haven't sold my shaping machine to BASE. I now have three APS3000 machines in their factory which has been pretty full on setting up. Only problem is I haven't had a chance to enjoy the Goldy waves!!!! I'm contracted to computer design and cut all their boards but also manufacture CLEARWATER surfboards from the BASE factory although I'm a separate business. It's been a pretty full on but rewarding 8 months and I've learnt so much from working with Simon, Darren and Murray. The loading all of BASE'S designs was very time consuming as you can imagine but now I'm finally on top of things. I now manage to get back to WA at least one week in every month to concentrate on my label and to work in my shop again. So I hope this info helps you or anyone else who may think I've disappeared into thin air!!! Happy surfing and all the best, Steve

Hi Craig, I'm sorry that fun shape didn't work out for you. These boards are more suited to learners or bigger surfers who don't want a mini mal but also don't want a performance shortboard. As most shapers do, I shape boards for a massive variety of surfers and surfing conditions and I'm always keen to hear from any of my customers their feedback, good or bad. All the best, Steve

G'day Steve, Don't be sorry as you shaped me the board i asked for, unfortunately i thought that was the direction to head at the time. The 6'6" Byrne Mullet has totaly rekindled my stoke for surfing again but i feel now that i am ready to move on to something a bit shorter and narrower but still maintain that boyancy of the epoxys. Would be interested to know your thoughts on the dimensions that would suit a 6'1" tall, 73 kg stickman on the wrong side of 40 for secrets super fast beachies. Thanks, Craig.

SRD: Nice to see you haven't disappeared from the scene. You shaped me a board a couple of years back and it was a ripper.

I lashed out and brought a Firewire about 5 months ago

It was hard to justify the price not knowing how much of the price is hype. I have found the board to accelerate out of turns much faster and general over all speed to be very good better than any glass or epoxy broad that I have tried and over all really glad I coughed up the money.

It dose feel breakable so may not suit everyone but for performance its goes really well

Had a mate buy a firewire a couple of months back. Snapped it on his third surf in waist high slop. Got it fixed and snapped it in a different spot, first surf back.
So much for being indestrucable, very scepticle..

SOS in Femantle has a heap of Bert Burger Sunova beach boards, mainly Mals. Bert developed the firewire construction with nev with lots of influence from his balsa wood developments in mandurah.

Now he's running his own factory again, this time in Thailand. He often uses different materials (balsa, other wood, or corecell) for the deck and bottom, not just corecell/pvc like firewires.

SDR, Dave here mate. Just looking through and saw your name and wanted to let you know that the 6' twin fin fish i got from your shop here about 12 months ago has been getting plenty of fellow shredders attention. i personally am reluctant to get on anything else lately and have been having an absolute blast in any size surf.
perhaps you should recommend this to bigger guys as i am 80 odd kg.

Iv got a Firewire myself. Best money I have EVER spent on a surfboard. rides fantastic, super smooth, super responsive, 20% more float, tough as any other tufflite or flexlite. Star surf and skate have a few in range at the moment, and can order them in aswell, thats where I got mine from. Go have a look and speak to the staff will tell you you great they are, benifits, etc.

If youve got the money, go for it.
