I have built a surfboard and love doing fibreglass repairs and fixing people's boards. I'm trying to source a cheaper supplier of fibreglass in Perth and came across this website:

www.fibreglass-resin-sales.com.au/category/products/reinforcements/

On the website there are three styles of cloth on offer, plain, twill, and satin. I was wondering if any shapers had thought of usig the alternative types of cloth. My reasoning for considering the other cloths is that most snaps occur across the board, not nose to tail. So I was thinking if I used twill or satin weave and lined up the cloth so the fibres went down the stringer of the board, would this give the board more strength and protection from cross-board snaps / creases?

The point of the different weaves is to have flatter strands of composite material the more the glass/carbon/aramid tows kink/weave the "weaker" they are, as well as some of the weaves are also better at conforming to contours than others.

I wouldn't build a board with a satin weave personally - I think it would be a nightmare it will conform to some shapes better but you can also pull strands around fare easier and when you do you edge trimming could be pretty daggy.

All weaved cloths have fibres running in 2 directions, if you want a cloth with a fibre running in a single direction you need to use a uni directional

Almost all boards are built with the cloth directions down and across the board/stringer. Personally I'd like to see a single layer uni down the board and then a +/- 45 diagonal layer with no fibre running at 90° to the stringer (waste of time imo). So that you control the flex with the uni and the impact/load with the off axis material.

Blinding reality is no mater what you build a board out of it will have the ability to crease and snap, part of this is a function of the core.

Hope they are doing well, my source has never been reliable. We need as many healthy Australian manufacturers as possible.

I hope they are still alive - I have a Murray Burton and it rocks. A mate of mine just had his new 6'6" silver bullet delivered a few weeks back and he is raving about it. It looks lovely............I want one.
