I recently bought a webber afterburner in SLX and been totally loving the lightweight and squirty dfeel of the board. i was surfing at my local beach on a small day I spun (poor attempt at a 360)and went off the back of tthe wave, the board sort of rolled over my shins, didnt hurt at all.

Upon grabbing my rail to duck dive a wave, it felt creased. ther was a crease abuot 100mm long with a split rining through it.

I was surprised at the size of the damage for what felt like a soft impact. the site says they have 2x4oz and a deck patch with 1x40z on the bottom, no mention of what laps the rails

Anyone else had any similar experiences and is SLX that fragile?

G'day,

I have the 9'1" McTavish Fireball Evo in SLX which I only ever surf on small/fat days... so it hasn't had what I consider a lot of use...

I think it's the GSI Thailand version...

I noticed only after five or six surfs that I had pressure dents on the deck from my back foot... Last weekend I stripped the old wax off for the first time and was shocked to see how 'dimpled' the deck was (especially considering I have not had any impacts with me or another board). Most disturbing was the cracking across the top of the stringer at the larger pressure dents (rear foot position).

Hi GPA, I've only had this board for less than a month, the deck seems to be holding up well, I'm usually pretty hard on the decks of my boards.

I shouldhave got a pic of the ding, it was way out of wack with the impact, the rail resembled a w turned on its side, like it had been crushed and had both a split across the rail and one along it.

was very surprised at the damage as there where no other boards nearby, I noticed thedamage as it is where I place my hand to duckdive.

Must have just hit the "sweetspot" and it collapsed

All the second hand SLX boards that I have seen look very beaten up compared to stardard PU foam boards.

4x4 is very light even with patches, Im not a big fan of epoxy but thats just me.

I would contact global and see what they say, epoxy shouldnt be that fragile, the board had small contact with your shin and IMO should be fine.
How many times have you used the board?

1 layer of 4oz on the bottom?!

I'd expect a board like that to ding every time I surfed it.

Nothing wrong with epoxy, it's all in the construction. Check out an early tufflite. Those things are made like sailboards and are indestructable. I have one which is about 5 years old, which my wife learnt on, and I have surfed heaps, and the only marks it has are from the sharp edges on the inside of my Landrover. Not a single pressure ding on the top, bottom or rail.

I bought it early jan and have surfed it at least 5 times a week since.

I got it back last night, excellent repai can hardly tell where the damage was, hopefully this was just a one off, fluke.

DL, Ive got a Burton quad that is diagonal 4x4 with carbon fiber patches on the tail and that seems to be holding up fine, some front foot marks but other than that its fine.

Tufflite construction is vacum construction epoxy where as these SLX are fiberglass over eps foam and finished in the same way as a stardard PU board with epoxy resins instead of PU resins.

I have seen a few tuffltes break but they are generally very strong..

I have a Webber " THE ONE " and it is creased about 30cm from the nose. I found this happens from hitting the lip and landing with weight bearing to the front. I was shocked to see how landing could cause such dammage. Great board but a little soft.

Bolgo, is your board EPS or PU blank wih epoxy? I think it is a result of the EPS foam having no support for the epoxy shell.

Not sure

I have a Rusty (the brand not ferris oxide) EPS board and other than some compression on the deck had no drams with dings and seems to have held up pretty well.
