But I didnt An hour later, the sound of his car in the drive way was one of the sweetest sounds I have heard in along time. I get you guys love the water. The waves, everything about the ocean I see surfers 6 days a week I am married to a shaper but please please please try and see it from our point of view. We love you just as much and whats happening is just to close to home

A family friend of ours was paralyzed by a surf board, another guy i know was killed on his way to the water. Sadly sharks aren't the only negative. Best is to educate yourself and live life as if every day is your last. Then you won't have regrets. By that i mean enjoy and be kind to each other.. Not live ridiculously.

I agree it would be hard. I struggle every time my kids want to come with me, its scares me even more as my wife jokes don't come home with out them or else. But do i have the right to deny them

Yeah I didn't want to chime in with my exaggerated views because of poor timing given recent events, but I definitely see where this wife is coming from. I'm also a family man. I honestly think the sooner these things are back, close to extinction the better. Nice post to start this one, something we have to think long and hard about! Seems almost selfish to surf at the moment when it's put like that.

It's alright I reckon Black Wavewidow can look after herself, just don't introduce yourself as Suba if you ever go in to order a board

I hear what you say.

I'm a mad ocean lover surf, swim, fish, and kite. My daughter is slowly realising what the fuss is all about and loves her nippers on a sunday and is demanding someone take her surfing.
My wife and her mother is not an ocean person at all. Waves frighten her and the thought of sharks eating her only child wakes her in the middle of the night.

However whilst there is little to console anxiety you have to look at this realistically. There is little chance of being taken by a shark, in fact you have more chance of a car crash, house fire, or an assault killing your loved ones.

There are inherent risks with everything we do. Being taken by a shark happens, but is very very unlikely.

After 30 years of surfing I dont know whether to look at it from the point of view that if it hasnt happened now, chances are slim it will happen. Or is it that my odds are shortening having got away with it for so long.

I wonder if the Jaws movies have played a role in all this. Sharks aren't the blood thirsty predators the movies paint them out to be. Not to mention as tragic as deaths from other means have occurred, they have not generated the frenzy we are currently seeing.

Everyday I am seeing it from Wavewidow's point of view where unless I need a refresher or it's perfect conditions, I am more inclined to give it a miss and spend time with loved ones. I just hope they know if I'm ever taken, I blame nothing and no one. Too many times grief turns to anger and the finger is pointed at the wrong thing.

Nah they are mellow, cuddly creatures that often swim up and share a wave with you like a friendly dolphin does.
As for Jaws.... I'm still a bit freaked out from gremlins to be perfectly honest.

See, I even refrained from commenting about one day experiencing kissing your wife and kids.

Christ, sb is full of downers. When did surfing and the Internet become such serious business?

no you didn't and you don't seem to be learning. The majority of the people that use this forum grew up without the anonymity of the internet. As you can see I don't hide behind avatars or usernames, what you see and read is me. I express my opinion and don't usually get into slinging crap or making smart arse comments or pissing people off. This is probably because I don't do it in reality and can't see why it's different on here, Perth is a small place and even though this seems anonymous it probably isn't, please don't make anymore references to my wife and kids, you'll understand when you evolve from the man child phase.

I don't mean to hijack this thread and apologise for doing so.

I think everyone just needs to relax a bit. The world is full of a range of people. Some people have a wife and kids and feel strongly about things, and some people don't and they feel strongly about other things. But everyone is different and I think it's a bit of a two way street with what's going on here.

I mean, we are allowed our opinion, I've expressed mine on some heated things recently. You can't take criticisms too seriously and we need tolerance because there are things all over the world that offend us.
