Those cheap Toys r Us models suck, weak motors, tx & rx (transmitters/receivers)-mass produced junk- don't get em.

The inventors of "RCsurfers" live in Northern Wollongong, I know these guys, they've been riped by big companies like Kyosho in japan, but don't have the finances to battle the big boys. There are many knock offs of their awesome hand crafted product. They've been refining the product for +10years. I'll try to find their contact details and post it later.
I edited a short video for them a couple of years ago, most of which looks like it was used in the above video.

If you consider buying one somewhere else look for ones that have a "brushless motor" otherwise they just cruise around in the water barely able to catch a wave let alone turn or get back out the back and you'll need extra batteries, the prop is also an important design feature. There is a fair bit of stuff needed for your kit. Remember it's an electronic device that used in salt water and a sandy beach- the worst possible place for electrics.

The video features the old non brushless motor and the brushless (I think), they go great and are a ton of fun.

A mate got one from toys r us for 150 bucks. It's pretty cool but the battery only lasts for 10 mins then you have to change to another one or go home. replacing the battery on the sand can be dodgy as you wouldn't want sand getting into the rc surfer. also at 40 bucks for a rechargable battery for this thing you have to weigh up if it's really worth it. that didn't deter my mate as he bought 5 batteries
