Hey guys so you know it's been a while since my last post and with summer coming along, I thought I'd trade in the shorty for a funboard making it easier to catch those summer waves. Took the board out today for the first time and had trouble adjusting (managed to catch a few but yeh). After the sesh, I felt I catched more and was more better with my shorty than this funboard.

Conditions weren't great in that it was quite choppy and waves were real messy and weak. Was that the problem or should I have stuck with my shorty through the summer?

funboard: 2nd hand custom built: 7'8'' x 21'' 5/8 x 2''3/4
shorty: 2nd hand star monstar: 6'6"x19"x2'5/8"

Newguy - you've gone up 14" in length, so you will definately notice the difference.

Check to see that you have the funboard planning flat when you are paddling, ie - that you are not too far back and 'chucking a wheelie' so to speak... if you are, this will create drag and slow you down.

I found when I got my first longer board that I caught less waves also, but like you, this was in awful choppy conditions... when you get a cleaner day you should notice the improvement in paddle speed/ease, and therefore the earlier cruise onto the wave, which will give you more time to get to your feet and position yourself for the bottom turn or trim.

Stick with it. There's a reason the longer boards come out in smaller surf... and today looked awful on the cams.

If it's typical summer windslop, it'll be super short period and you need quick reflexes, direction changes, and acceleration when paddling. Your shortboard is better for this type of thing than a longer board. Save the funboard for mornings, when the swells are better defined.

Ahhh Legion, that brings back memories of when i was a grom, walking from Contacio to Scarbs, then surfing all the way back to Seconds. If we got a few good ones, we would do it all over. Chances of that happening now.....ZERO. But they were good times...

With the surf the way it is at the moment around here I don't think it would have helped you on any board...

Actually, I drove past a few days ago and was sorely tempted by the 1' windslop.

I'm currently looking for a new engine.

So I guess my $100 drive was more like a $10,000-$15,000 drive. Expensive surf.

You guys do know those winds that ruin your surf all summer are extremely good for a whole lot of other things????

My part of the goldy was blown out this morning so I paddled my outrigger canoe up wind for a few k's and then back down surfing the wind bumps all of the way home. No, it is not the same as getting barreled but at least I rode some waves this morning and kept fit for cyclone season approaching. After surfing for over 25 years it's also good to have some new challenges. 1 foot grovel just does not appeal.

I have seen some amazing vids by a guy in Mandurah paddling the Doctor downwind on his OC1. Don't despair when there's no waves, just grab something else to enjoy the ocean.

3 new boards on order, they're predicting the most active cyclone season since '74.

Old Landcruiser. Dead engine is 1HD-T. I'm looking at a new 1HD-T long block, or ideally a wrecked 100 series 1HD-FTE Landcruiser to do a full transplant of whole engine bay, electrical system (loom and computers) and transmission. Unfortunately wreckers know how desirable these engines/vehicles are and prices are sky high.
