I've been surfing for a few years now and looking at trying to surf some bigger waves (maybe double overhead at biggest). My level of ability isn't great, although i make most of my takeoffs and can get some floaters and cutbacks going. I weigh about 75-80 kilos and i've been surfing a 6'2" by 21" retro fish lately but my old board was a 6'5" by 19" and i was just as comfy with that.

What should i be looking for in a board to surf places down south like Yallingup, Margies etc? I may also be in Indo for extended amounts of time next year as well, so looking for something to cover that as well. I think 19" wide is probably about right for me (as if i went narrower my take off and paddling might begin to suffer) but i'm unsure about length, tail shape etc. I don't really have the money to go get something new hence the reason i'm asking here and not a shaper! cheers

As far as width goes, you can generally replace width with length. Longer boards paddle into waves easier (which is why you use a longer board for bigger waves), so you don't need the width. Also, having too much width can be a liability on bigger waves, as you are going much quicker than on small waves, so the width just makes you bounce around too much on the ripples/chop on the face.

Diverse have a good set of dimensions on their website. Should give you a fair idea of what you need to look for in a second hand board. Check out the board models page.

from http://diversesurf.com.au/models/guns/turbo/turbo.html :

Weight: 75-85kg
Build: AVERAGE

Length:6'6
Width: 18 1/2
Thick: 2 1/2
Volume: 29.8

I would also try a rounded pin for the tail. This will hold in barrels better.

something about 7 foot helps as a back up on the bgger days, only for the paddling. nothing worse than getting caught up the top of the wave on a solid bomb at margs, looking over the edge into the abyss, awaiting the inevidible. if your a strong paddler then 6'6" would be great.
