hey pal, whats with all the conflict with bodyboarders and surfers. I enjoy bodyboarding and im a chick!. I think bodyboarding is wicked, the stuff some guys can do is amazing. Like ars', inverts and an doing 360's all the way into shore. i also surf too, but i have full respect for bodyboarders, yes, you can get some losers, but you can also get loser surfers too?.

So you enjoy your surfing from the beginning (make it easy on yourself) I would start on a 8 footer and you will get the hang of it alot faster than than shorter board. Then you can drop down to a shorter board and keep dropping until you find the board that suites your area/beach!

enjoy

mac

PS maybe hire/demo a couple of boards from a surf shop before you buy!

7-8 foot mal or high volume board with good width.

Best thing to do is go to your local surfboard shop not a clothing store and have a chat with them. In Manly I tend to go to Aloha or Dripping Wet to look at boards, there's some good stores in Brookvale on Harbord rd as well ie Bennett (massive store front).

Being able to boogieboard is a huge advantage in learning to surf.

I think the biggest challenge to anyone learning is trying to get the timing right to paddle onto a wave.

Once you can paddle onto a wave, it's pretty straight forward to stand up.

If you can windsurf and body board proficiently (ie, go across the face of the wave), don't waste your time with a 8 foot mal. Get yourself a 6'7" thruster, 19" wide, no less than 2 1/4" thick, square tail.

Myself and all my mates learned to surf on shortboard thrusters, and being able to body board as kids made learning to surf pretty simple.

Just get out there and do it!

Agreed DL, Im similar size and started on a 6.8 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/2 sqaure tail. It was a big old thing but was great for getting started. Old Dave Lewy I think?

DL is spot on.

My first board was a thruster with channels, I also booged b4 that.

At the end of the day its how fired up and determined to are to have surfing be a part of your life. To be honest you will most likely get a little frustrated at times in the early stages. But what ever you do , dont quit!!!
Fire up and "CHARGE"!!!!!!!
Its well worth it. I hope you know what I mean one day soon
Best of luck.

Their pretty good about doing trade in's if you ever feel that you've out grown it. If you had a chat with them and looked at a couple different boards I'm sure you'll be fine

And wtf your 6'7" and 80kg, I'm 6'5" and 105kg (granted I'm sitting on my a$$ with my arm in a sling), bloody bean sprout.

Enjoy the board, don't foget to post a pic of it.

Mate when you say you sank?do you mean nose or tail?if this is the case, its only a matter of more water time for you to find the right feel!

If you got up first surf, well done see you on tour.

Need more board speed / teaspoon of of cement and get out in the line up. If your surfing Manly just north or south of the southern pipe is a good place to start, the guys closer to queenscliff can get a bit agro.

Sank in the tail, i was being careful not to nose dive. Its not exactly my first time, i surfed at Wakiki Beach in Hawaii a couple of times on these huge longboards.

The board is sinking because you are surfing the whitewash.

Paddle onto an unbroken wave and you'll be fine.

Surfed at Freshwater yesterday and had a lot more success....

However, i foudn that when i pop up my knees scrape along the board, i drew blood after about 40 minutes in hte water....is this a technique problem, or what?

I think it's a tech problem, but as you say you are learning and if you enjoyed your surf well you are the winner!
If you are taking too long to pop up you maybe dragging your knees on the board!
If so lay on the floor (gut down)and practice popping up and getting right into surf stance, this really works, 50 + at night!

let us know how you go!

I agree, there's idiots on both sides, (its just a rivalry that should die with the people that started it back in the day). ive bodyboarded for 15 years and i love it, i also recently bought a stick to learn to stand up surf during the summer slop.

That kind of attitude causes all sorts of problems and there's no need for it, there is a lack of respect in the water as it is without people like you making it worse

I think its the kind of people who know jack all about hte beach and beach etiquete who go out on bodyboards, mainly teenagers, who get in peoples way that cause a bad name.....I think people who do it properly with fins etc who are more than just once a year beach goers are fine.

The other day i discovered a new nemesis. The crowds of people who swim in the surfing area.....

I would get a G board matey, They go really good and are easy to stand and balance on. I recommened about a 7 ft. I started out bodyboarding when i was a grom, I paddled out and got a set wave to the beach, I went in threw my bodyboard away and paddled back out on a old single fin. Bodyboarding was to easy no challenge compared to stand up. Anyway it took me about a year to actually ride a wave stand up. so there is a bit more to it than sliding on your guts with flippers on. Good luck and dont go back to the booga. When youve paid your dues you will be pulling into big barrels to hands.
