Being able to boogieboard is a huge advantage in learning to surf.
I think the biggest challenge to anyone learning is trying to get the timing right to paddle onto a wave.
Once you can paddle onto a wave, it's pretty straight forward to stand up.
If you can windsurf and body board proficiently (ie, go across the face of the wave), don't waste your time with a 8 foot mal. Get yourself a 6'7" thruster, 19" wide, no less than 2 1/4" thick, square tail.
Myself and all my mates learned to surf on shortboard thrusters, and being able to body board as kids made learning to surf pretty simple.
Just get out there and do it!
DL is spot on.
My first board was a thruster with channels, I also booged b4 that.

At the end of the day its how fired up and determined to are to have surfing be a part of your life. To be honest you will most likely get a little frustrated at times in the early stages. But what ever you do , dont quit!!!
Fire up and "CHARGE"!!!!!!!
Its well worth it. I hope you know what I mean one day soon

Best of luck.
