Hi there,

Im going to be in bali for a few days in December and am keen to learn. As far as I here Kuta is great for learning and cheap (loving this!) Any advice on rentals, classes, places to stay.. or just about anything!

I'm solo travelling on my way back to Canada for a white Christmas back home.

Cheers!

Million places along Kuta and Legian beach to hire boards. There's all pretty much the same. If you're not hiring a foamy and are hiring a real board then give it a once over and make sure there is no nasty damage already done to it that you don't make them aware of. Don't want to get charged for damage you haven't done.

Other than that, have a ball. Plenty of the beachboys that hire out the boards and run the little esky bars on the beach will also do surf lessons or know someone who does. It's pretty cheap but you get what you pay for. There's the forever popular Big Kahuna surf school in Kuta as well...a more professional outfit and they start you out on big foamies.

Some friendly advice: Don't get 'too' complacent in the water at Kuta. We've seen people drown and done a lot of rescues ourselves. It is a great spot to learn and you'll have 5hit loads of fun but there are some fierce rip currents so pay attention and be careful if you wind out out the back because there can be some pretty sizable waves at Kuta, especially when the tide shifts (which it does quickly) and watch out for other surfers...for your sake and there's.

As for places to stay...all depends on your style and budget to be honest. I tend to only spend a couple of nights in Kuta for a few days of hard partying then bail somewhere quiet and away from the crowds. Some people love Kuta others despise it. It all comes down to what you want out of your trip.

Pro Tip: don't use commission money changes, never act interested when making a purchase and don't feel like you're being rude when you ignore people in the streets.

I recently stayed at the Island Bali Hotel - very reasonabally priced, great rooms and a nice environment with friendly guests. Its run by 2 Aussies boys from Byron. You will meet lots of fellow travellers there! The girls love the pool! Its a 5 min walk to the beach and just far enough out of the rat race of Kuta. You can rent boards and have lessons etc on the beach right in front. The Cheyne Horan surf school is close by as well.

Give La Planca a crack for some sundowner beers - its just along the beach front from Route 66. Also stop by the Deus shop in Canggu for a look. Great food and product.

If you are bargaining for stuff prices are still about 25% from where they start as a general rule. Just halve and halve again.

Enjoy.

Great advice. Would there be another beach that I may be better off learning? less people more space and such?

Wheres the quiet spot? hopefully you don't mind sharing it haha.

Thanks, good to know where to stay! Been reading a bunch, but most info is too formal, and a decent hostel has shown up online (the way i normally travel through asia).

I'll definetely be cracking a beer at La Planca,

cheers bud.

Kuta is a pretty good place to learn, despite the crowds and the potential dangers.
At least they've got a relatively good surf-lifesaver team there

I'll be on my way back in Early-Mid February and from what I hear the surf isn't too good/ is dirty. I had some extra time to extend this tail of the trip but I'm not sure if its worth the bother. Will I still be able to learn how to surf in Bali in Feb?
