Gday crew,
I recently read in another thread about the importation of cheap Chinese boards. This is one direction of manufacturing I just cant support.
Yeah Yeah, we all get to ride cheap boards and you can get almost 2 boards for the price of one "real" one.

Personally I have never owned one of these, just ridden em a coupla times.

I know that the shaping machines are doing most of the work (roughing out) these days but the final product is still finished off by hand on any decent board.

The imported "other" boards dont even have the rails squared off properly, no pride or care taken, rushed uneaven glass job and pushed out the door by the hundreds.
Probably by some old skinny dood who does'nt surf and is getting paid a bowl of rice a day?

This importation is killing our industry that is putting the real craftsmen out of buisness. Anyway, what happened to supporting Aussie made??

Im quite happy to pay $600 for my custom weapons! Nothing beats the feeling of that first surf on a board you have just waited 3 weeks for and your instantly ripping!

ANyway guys dont mind me, its late and just felt like havin a biatch

I agree, support your local shaper/manufactuer but I think ultimately it will go the same way as sailboarding almost everything made in china or thailand.

I asked the original question and in some patriotic way I agree but for a dirty ol mal to muck around in in the slush the Scarb shops start at about $800 even second hand. Sure if it was a hundred or two in it you may fly the flag but at double the price? The other thing is I was looking at epoxy boards and I think those $1000 ones in the shops arent made by some export drinking, Margs local lad wearing a midnight oil t-shirt but rather from a nicer sweat shop in Southern China who serve 2 bowls of rice a day!
Love to support the local shaper but I have others to support as well

I love my custom boards, but my 7S fish is made in Thailand and it is one of the best boards I have ever ridden. $450 with a tailpad and leash! The finish on the glass job has a bit to be desired, but who cares about looks?

However, I don't know why people spend upwards of $700 on a Rusty, etc, when you can get a custom for $550.

I agree Rex and my job has often nearly gone overseas - but I remain competitive to a global market and dont rely on patrotism to beat economics

Most likely you don't have to compete with 3rd world labour like alot of manufacturing does - and that's the bottom line.

Well said. Hmmm $300 or $700?
My Chinese board has nice sharp rails which smooth out nice and round towards the nose. The glass job is very nice. If anyone would like to see the board Im happy to show it.

I can only laugh at the irony of a trade union advocate singing the praise of a board made with cheap chinese labour that undercuts boards made with Australian labour.

I have not found this to be the case in Perth.

Plus, I usually fix my board myself. It's not that hard...

Thats fine by me as long as the labour stays in China for the Chinese people.
Then its up to us to buy what ever product we want. It could be surfboards, mobile phones, watches, toys etc etc etc

I've got a couple of surftecs and it only costs me $50 for the repair i had done to my fish. Took a large chunk out of my rail (and my shin) and it was faired, glassed, and they matched the paint color.

I buy the surftechs because they use epoxy to laminate theit boards. If I could get good custom epoxy boards for $600 I'd be there in a flash.

Fact of life.
Next time you buy a pair of shoes spare a thought for the local boot maker down south trying to earn a buck rather than buying an asian import.
Support your local manufacturer Rexy.

Oh and when you want some new clothes, a mate of mine has his own business printing on shirts that are 100% australian made.
And when you go to Bali for your next surf trip please dont bring back cheap DVD's.
And dont do any file sharing on the internet on limewire or any torents.
Gee its handy having flexible principles

It has everything to do with buying chinese made surfboards! and it makes you a first class hypocrite with no principles, your union strives to get you a better standard of living through fair employment, hourly rates, awards and working conditions while you support surfboards made with cheap 3rd world labour that undercut local surfboards made with local labour and will ultimately lower thier stardard of living.

You would be the first to cry SCAB if someone tried to undercut your labour, its the same thing greeny - just a different method.

I will say it again Rexy... check the products you buy next time and see where they have come from.
Cast the beam out of your own eye first before you start telling me what sort of principles I have.

SCAB!

Come on greeny show some backbone, you support a system of protectionism for your own livelyhood, why roll over on your countrymen?

loner - if you stop shopping in major brand stores and bought a cheap chinese board perhaps this surfing odyssey / van adventure might take off the ground relatively sooner...

could be something to look into, no?
