Has anybody got any experience with MR rocket or spitfire? I've not been able to find any reviews on the web.
I'm spending a year in Newcastle and have a 8'6' McT 8 ball. Been riding long boards for decades and I reckon the right shortboard to go with the mal would be real handy.
Was on the verge of buying a 6' Al merrick POD as they have good reviews then I saw the MR booards and they look impressive.
I'd like something thats not going to be too much of a culture shock swapping from the mal. I'm 77kg and pretty fit for 50. Trying to find a board that has volume that I can still sink to duckdive and paddles well. I'm an OK but not great surfer. I'm leaning towards a 6'6' spitfire presently. Greatly appreciate any suggestions and thanks in advance.

Hey mate, I've looked at both boards but don't really remeber the differences and details but as the others said just give MR a call. Or wait till you get to Newcastle as his boards are on display at Slimes surf shop in Newcastle, you could also call them, ask for Mick, he worked with MR in his old shop for 30 plus years and knows his stuff.

And I think both these boards are available through surftech so maybe check out there website for a rundown.

g'day, i have just bought an MR flying fish,6'6" tuflite and i have previously owned a 6' 8 spitfire. I am 52 and 100kg. The spitfire was a fantastic board and went well in head high and over waves, unfortunately it was a bit lite on in volume for me but would suit 80 to 90 kg. My new flying fish is perfect for my size and weight, i have only ridden it twice and it paddles like a mini mal and turns like a short board. On friday i rode it in slow onshore chest high waves that had a bit of a clean face on the inside and it flew fast over the flats and i managed to do a high speed top turn on one wave that had me stoked. The nose is full but the board releases well and has control with out skate, due to the pulled in tail and hard rails. My next surf on Saturday was in average waist to chest high beach break waves which mostly closed out. I got a few that held up and the board flew again all the way to the beach, even when the wave got tiny at the end.
MR is a fantastic shaper, as is Simon Anderson, i think they know how to make a board for all surfer types. I also have a Webber which i like surfing as well.
As i was coming out of the water i saw an MR super twin which looked really nice as well.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I was in Slimes in Newy a couple of weeks ago buying a wettie and had a chat with mick and he put me onto the MR boards. I really liked the flyingfish 6'6 in tuflite but at 40 ltrs might be a tat big. What Kleb says convinces me. The 6'6 spitfire is 36 ltrs so I'm leaning that way. The supertwins the same shape so I'm not sure what the difference is. Plenty of people in Newy riding MR's and they rave about them.
After many years experience with composite sailboards I'll go with tuflite. People can say what they like about "popouts" but they've served me well. I had some dissapointing results with custom boards in the past.
A mate of my son has lent me his 6'8 Supertwin to try out. Its a fairly old polyester. I'll take it for a spin and see what happens.

i just went south yesterday and rode some small well shaped waves on my flying fish, and i loved it. I have a 6'3" webber minifish but for me the MR seems to have it covered from knee high to overhead. Having a versatile surfboard is great, easier to travel and handle changing conditions in the surf. I have had lots of tuflite surfboards and i dont mind the stiffness, i just love the durability and the fact they stay new longer. You will enjoy a 6'6" spitfire as it will be versatile and catch waves like a mal. It would also be spot on in clean waves like indo, but also great fun in east coast beachies.

I couldn't take it any longer. I walked out of Slimes with a brand new tuflite 6'6 flying fish. I realised I was making excuses to go there and heading straight for the flying fish to give it a cuddle. Last time I couldn't bear to let it go so I took it home.
Took it for its maiden voyage today in 3, maybe 4 foot. I can see why guys are raving about this thing. What a phenominal bit of gear. Paddles as easy as the mal, pulls onto waves every bit as easy as the 8 ball and I can still duckdive it no prob. Wasn't quite ready for how lively and fast it is once up on a wave, A couple more surfs and I'll have that sorted out.
Really impressed with the service and help from Mitch and Mick at Slimes in Newy and thanks for the forum feedback
