I briefly looked into this you need paulownia wood( don't know if thats correct spelling. You can buy a wood blank online but don't know what the quality of the wood will be. If you google tom wegner there's some cool you tube clips on design. Also google dave rastavich alaia barrel

Other name is Kiri,

I would you pine for proto typing and I think Cedar is quite light, or lighter than pine.

Cheers

I shaped a Pine one a few years ago just as a tester and then ended up surfing it a bit until it split.
They are tricky as hell to surf. mind you mine been pine had almost no float. guys like Rasta and Co make it look waaay to easy
Paulownia Timber would help but its a marginal increase in flotation.

Worked best on shallow waves where you could stand to push yourself into it. Really fast when it got going though.

I now have a 5'6 Seaglass foamie Alaia and get huge enjoyment from it in a much bigger variety of waves.
Not as fast but the volume means the wave count is up .

Paulownia is the go. its naturally pretty water resistant and only needs a little linseed oil from time to time. there are some mills that you can get it from and glue up a blank yourself or I think you can buy a blank from paulownia surfboard supplies....google it. Best shapes I've found are the peanut shape for smaller 5-6 foot ones and a parabolic outline for anything mid 6 foot and above. It is a really nice wood to work with too. be aware though that as much fun as they are to ride, and they are an absolute hoot, your wave count will be tiny because they are so hard to paddle!
