MickPC said..Yeah not fun, its happened to me twice this year in a strong current at the same place. Had a hell of a time trying to reach down with the current pulling me away & my board tombstoning. Basically the situation that inspired the kook of the year thread

About six years ago I got caught on the inside ledge of a Bombie right in front of the peak. When a wave came I was underwater for a few seconds, i initially tried to undo the leggie at the board end because it tombstoning right next to me. Gave up on that after a couple of waves.
i swapped to an ankle release. I'd pop up get a breath or two and try to undo the leggie and then get hit by another wave. In any swell there is a hideous inshore current heading north so getting to my ankle was hard work. All up I reckon I was trapped for about five minutes. That sucked balls.
after I release myself, my board was still trapped an tombstoning about fifteen metres off shore. Allowing for the current I walked up the beach and let myself be swept down to the board. Trouble was I struggled to actually stay with the board now I wasn't anchored, because of the current and six feet of whitewater that was rumbling through regularly. This took me five or six wash bys to finally get the leggie undone. I was almost to the point of just saying "Fark that" and leaving the board to it's fate.
