I stretch my arms and neck before a surf. Only quickly but that's all it takes for me

Makes a big difference for recovery after surf..

trainers say there is nothing to be gained from stretching cold muscles.. so stretch after the surf...before is just a waste of waves.

mate i would say if its longboard related its because you cant duckdive a mal like a shorty so your head cops the force more??? just thinking? i get it from time to time...get a massage

Cause your feet don't hang over....

But.... Cause they don't it puts more pressure on your lower back, paddle if one leg bent up helps take the pressure off your lower back. Don't know why but that's why the cubbies do it when they paddle the prone boards.... I read it somewhere years ago so it could be complete BS...

Chrispy, for what it's worth I just came back from a 90min sesh on the mal, paddling hard against a very strong offshore for 1ft sliders... and now I'm tight across my upper back and neck...

I think it may be that the paddling position is different... I feel that I tend to paddle a mal with my shoulders and neck off the board more - where as with a shorty, you'd be down lower?

Dunno... just a thought.

I am with Mac . I think it is part of being over 40 .

Surfing the longboard actually loosens up my neck . I think it is all to do with neck / back / shoulder position .

According the the sheila that does my neck massage salt water should remove muscle aches WTF

For some one with a "rooted back" you seem to pop up pretty easy.

There is actually a book with a few to many technical terms but a few good tips...

I'm on the iPad and can't copy the text but... The surfers health handbook, click below and you should go to the right page.
