On the back of my beer thread, tell the greenroom what vino you are drinking tonight.
These days I enjoy 'old school' Chardy.
Know the Hunter Valley like the back of my hand.
Have started to venture into Beechworth,Victoria recently & Burgundy, France.

Wife claims I snore if I drink wine.
No evidence that I have seen to support it, but generally stick to beer.

Mostly the robust reds like Shiraz and Merlot. Will drink Pinot Noir if a gun is held to my head.

No brand is favored, I'll even drink the cardboard variety if it's tasty, let's face it, there's too much wine wanking going on, it's just fermented grape juice.

If the wine is a little too edgy, I'll often put a couple of cubes of ice in with it, I kept that a secret for a long time thinking that if the wine wankers heard of it they'd give me a bad time, then about a year ago I read a story about wine myths and it said that it's quite acceptable to drink red with ice if it suits the wine.

Agree about the ice Obct..the "room temp" idea on reds is funny..

Room temp in Europe might be a little different to our room temp summers.

I can't stomach whites..and I've tried hard..

But a Chateau Cardboard Lachlan Ridge Cab/Merlot..cellared correctly on it's side is reasonable indeed.

In fact by the 4 glass it's as good as Grange...until the morning...

OB - my good mate who is a wine maker often keeps his opened reds in the fridge - as he reconds they last longer - I am not against a slightly chilled red unless having it with a nice steak.

Have been sampling lots of Tassie wines the last few months. Some gems out there. Andy has put me in touch with a few tasty ones - the Goaty Hill resling is a fav at the moment - nice and dry not too fruity - and also Moores Hill's collection. I find the Tassie Pinots lacking compared to my favoured Central Otago numbers from NZ.

Meanwhile in pretty much any supermarket & mini mart in Prague lol...took this pic in a big Tesco supermarket in the middle of the old town. No I was too scared to try it, not coz of the herbs, but the liquid around it haha...did want to try a cannabis beer at a riverside market, but they were sold out. I think the guy selling them drank 1/2 his batch himself, he looked off his head

I often drank Sacred Hill Shiraz from Bertoli before I went to Europe & continued to have a glass of Shiraz a day for most of the trip. It was always served at room temperature which I don't really like, I prefer it to be chilled. Especially when its a resonably warmish day like it was most of the time, sometimes over 30c. Missus always seemed to end up with better tasting white wine or rose. Bought a bottle of this wine in Cesky Karlov & loved it. Polished the first bottle off on one beutiful arvo & went back for more the next day. Ended up bringing a couple home for special occasions. So I've been turned on to Rose & bought a 5L cask of it for $15 (Berri) to continue my medicinal believe in a glass of red a day keeps the Dr away. The Berri isn't bad either...but yeah, this stuff is a very nice drop

I reckon 10 years ago in the glut you could buy a <$2 bottle of cleanskin red that was on par with a $10 bottle. Now they're all undrinkable. The cheapest nice drop for my money is a McGuigan black at $5.65 in a carton when it's on special (about half the time).

www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_73984/mcguigan-black-label-red;jsessionid=EC0F79E7744E9C0DBCD16A0F7221510A.ncdlmorasp1302?bmUID=loEvLFH&CAWELAID=857483472&e_cid=ps:ds:GOOGLE:&ds_keywords=ds_kw:PRODUCT+GROUP&gclid=CjwKEAjww_a8BRDB-O-OqZb_vRASJAA9yrc57LGUcOH1JMVgigyPitVY2i8oDIZL5Z39N0OG8hHLMBoCwD3w_wcB

The stanleys red casks are very drinkable at the moment too.

Yep, if it's drinkable, just enjoy it, and don't let the wine wankers bully you into paying more than you need to.

Ah, the pros & cons of living in Tasy.
Put that in the 'pro' column.
In the 'con' column put 'freeze your nuts off'

Agree, McGuigan black is probably the best in that price range...
An old girlfriend of mine, Maxine, she loved the McG Black, for the price...

I've bought a couple of Aldi cheapo's too, and they are very good, considering the price point!

15 years ago when I knew zero about wine, me and the Mrs would choose wine which had nice labels. We use to buy a 1 litre bottle named 'The returnable wine bottle company' for 10 bucks. When you returned the empty bottle you could purchase another bottle for $7.50. We drank all sorts of crap back then including Mc Guiggan black label. You have to start somewhere I guess.
These days I rarely spend less then $20 on a bottle and the dearest $130. Average price around $35 I reckon.
Purchase most of my wine direct from wineries and rarely buy from bottle shops (although Dans stock some good wine if I need it asap).

Scotty if you buy a bit of booze flick me a pm with your email addy and I'll forward you a folio. Our booze is pretty damn good and you'll get it at wholesale plus 10%
One of our wineries just took out gold and double gold at San Fran International for both Shiraz and Cab, only winery on earth to do so and they'll set you back about $23 a bot. Some killer Spanish plonk too...

Settling into my second pint of the second cask of Berri Rose...I think the first batch was smoother, 2nd seems a little more sour. But still a refreshing drink after a long stint of shiraz. I will investigate further

Agreed Mick..

Back a while I could afford to dabble in the "better" vinos..but these days it's really value and some boxes have a good drop

Renmano and Lachlan Ridge aren't too bad, def not up there with a lot of $25+ bottles but easy on the palate and lighter on the pocket.

Back in the day anything Penfolds was a nice choice..l always went > $18 and it never disappointed.

And on that ..Screw caps are a great improvement..had a few "corked" reds..but never had a bad screw top..( didn't mean you Suzie !)

Margaret River wines are pretty good. Recent purchases from Flying Fish Cove, Voyager, Driftwood, Churchview, Woody Nook and Greedy Sheep. But that is scratching the surface. Where do you work/own Smicko?
