I'm getting a new car and eying off a Tracklander or Rhino Pioneer platform. Never having used any system other than two bars, I was wondering if my worries about affecting rocker when I they are strapped down are just the paranoid delusions of a madman?

Keep walking, thedrip, and don't make eye contact?

Or legitimate concern?

Real men should know how to use rope.

And tie a full Windsor.

The Rhino Pioneer platform is rockstar dude... they are beautifully built and look the business. I personally much prefer these to the traditional bar system as the board is more stable, no flapping noise from the bag and just more versatile with other stuff like camping, carting timber etc etc etc...

A mate of mine just put one on his prado and it looks the business and our short boards seem to go on fine. Mind you it may be a different story with some of your big boards Drip. What length pioneer are you looking at? if it's only 1500mm or thereabouts there should only be a minimal amount of rocker affected.

Cages work well when I have used them. Longer boards work a treat on them. Just a bit more hassle putting boards on a cage set up than normal two bars.

But rope if tied to tight will make more damage to your rails then a flat strap, IMHO..

A good thread though, as i often look at peoples surfboard stacks and wonder how the hell they stay on. I micro set them up and still panic most of the time

This is how we head to Albany with 2 sups and 5 boards. All up about 115 kilos and my roof racks are technically rated to only 100kilos. I have been toying with a third bar (Cross member, to be with in safe weight range,) but i have also worried about the rocker of the boards and wondered if its even necessary..

Thanks for everyone's replies.

And careful tying is important. I had four boards come off the roof at 110 after the tie down slipped off the end of the bar in a crosswind. Good advertisement for creatures travel bags as they were undamaged bar one fin.

It's an attempt to regain some much needed storage as I move from dual cab to a wagon. We do heaps of long term wilderness camping in the north west and south east.

On the dual cab I had rhinos over the cab and a basket over the canopy.

Its the 2.1m I think. So the short boards would be resting on their nose or tail, rather than tied down mid board.

I have a 2.1m rhino platform and just stick a small foam tube under the boards near the nose, works a treat.
