i find it really hard to read the runners/ocean when i lift my sunnies off compared to having them on

i do every dw run with them on - cloudy, rain or sunshine.

anyone got any thoughts on the subject

Glare on a sunny day comes usually only from one direction. On a cloudy and or even a rainy day it comes from all around you so the "disabiliity" glare is often much greater. .Even more so on the water and even in winter when the sun is lower in the sky.
Also if you know anyone who has needed pterygiums removed ,they will often describe the 3 months following as excruiciating.Thats why surgeons usually whip em off in the winter when they will cause less discomfort. As the Bolle ad used to say "put em on your face" rain hail or shine.

I sometimes get vertigo at the end of a Maliko run with polarized glasses on. The water looks like it's moving in 15 directions. Of course that's because it is, but I'm better off not seeing it.

Maui Jims, which are among the best all-around sunglasses IMHO give the worst vertigo. The weird german wraparound bicycle goggles I picked up in Hood River give me the least, though I had to yank them off yesterday at the end of a run.

Go Polarised (Maui Jims) - for viewing underwater scenery. With windsurfing, they do make it difficult to read wind on the water, so prob the same with DW'ers I'd guess.

Never done a downwind run but i find in the surf it's too hard to read the water with sunglasses on(maybe because i dont have much sight) In flatwater sunnies are a must.

Agreed Bill , MJ are the best polarised lens on the planet. You could try the Maui Jim HT lens without too much wrap. The greater the wrap the greater the vertigo potential.
The HT is a great lens for the more ..... senior paddlers amongst us.Its the one with a greeny hue.

LL..Fuglies are pretty good at $79 a pair with case, strap and polarized they have a eva type of padding on the inside that will unclip and the strap works like a pair of goggles ,worn by the SAS boys

thx's.

i must say i usually take them off heading in the surf zone.

another point is we are usually heading into the afternoon sun.

i just find i can see the variations in the water and what its going to do.

when i take them off i can't read it as well. i feel like i'm dw ing half blind to whats going on

cheers

Tried using sunnies years ago for early morn surf without success but have been using a pair of sea specs laterly with some success.they still become a pain as the water dries on the lenses but they seem to stay on after a face plant so far.

I had a pair of prescription polarised sunnies for about 3 weeks until I lost them having a paddle at 1ft Teatree Noosa. Looked for them for about 2 hours but tortoiseshell sunnies on a rock bottom was not a good combo. How about these? They float and you might be able to spot them

I have a pair of OAKLEY WATER JACKETS polarized glasses they are the best money can buy. Mine are 9 years old now and still going strong. I wore them a lot when I was a Downwind prone Paddleboarder. But when I defected to Downwind SUPing in July 2007 I hate wearing polarized sunnies as you can see to deep into the water it does my head in - after you've seen some big fish I'd rather not know.

They sound good I'll check them out. Wouldn't mind getting prescription again though so I can see Lacey paddling off in the distance on his Bullet

The cheapies will give you fine UV protection (to AS) but often cause alot of distortion and "visual disturbance" ie vertigo headches ; more so when driving.
MJ and recently Oakley water jacket are available in prescription.
Take a second wallet though

The lenses in those brands are no doubt high quality. I'm not sure however that their prescriptions are made in house rather than retro fitted by a third party meaning in the end you are probably just paying for a very expensive frame

With some of the lesser brands agreed however assuredly MJ and now Oakley both have spent huge bucks on their prescription facilities .Its a huge growth area for them and a great point of difference in this massively competitive industry.

actually i can vouch for oakley quality, I have them for my normal prescription sunnies, the lenses were made in the US and fitted here, first ones came with the wrong prescription, my optomertists assistant got that wrong, the 2nd pair came back not dark enough tint to my liking, so they went back to the US to get made more dark

But no way i would contemplate wearing $100 sunnies in the water, not even over the water given my propensity to fall in..........
