In relation to right of way boating rules
And considering a row boat is a vessel as are windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Should SUP's also be considered Vessels and thus be under the control of RoW rules?

Yes, when dealing with other vessels a SUP should abide by marine traffic rules - stick to the right, right has right of way, etc.

Why do you ask? Under what circumstances could it possibly matter? (apart from crossing shipping lanes and going into restricted areas)

A raceboard going full pelt with a tailwind can barely get up to the 5 knot speed limit let alone exceed it.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO never!!!!!

In NSW (the nanny state) SUPs are not vessels and we want to keep it that way, if it changes they will make us wear PFD to SUP in 8" of water, surfing, the lot and down here in the shire we have the biggest nanny of them all in the waterways people!!!

For starters vessels have to give way to swimmers Including surfers, and if a SUP is in waves with Kiters or sailboarders and is a vessel then it has to follow the same RoW rules.

Just outta curiousity, why did you post this in the longboard forum ?

Do you own a sup ?

If you do, then you should know that we make our own rules !

If you dont - refer to "above"

Ahhhhh well
It was nice while it lasted, you know, few drinks on a Friday night, "we're all surfers, just all gotta chill a little and put yourself in the other blokes shoes" kinda thang.
Now this.......so looking forward to being covered in other peoples sh.t for the next five pages this thread will undoubtedly drag on for.
I'm out!!

Yeah a kite doing 25knots verses a Sup doing maybe 7 Knots Dwing, gee wonder who should give way. Personally I have nearly been taken out by Kites a few times coming into long reef on a dwer.

I noticed you have posted this in the longboard room. Then I thought I would check out the kite and windsurf rooms and wouldn't you know it you have posted there as well. Are you conducting a uni project to analyze reactions to bla, bla, bla or what ?

Ahhh, yes that is disappointing that this is about a hidden agenda rather than a real question.(again!). It's all about sharing waterways and respecting other users. In the surf you follow surf etiquette no matter what board - this has been flogged to death in recents posts.

On waterways you should follow marine traffic rules, whether you are on a SUP, a prone board, surf ski, rowing shell, you are sharing the waterway with other users, traffic rules are for your safety and theirs (there are certain exceptions for paddle craft). Marine rules are very logical and practical.

As far as downwinding is concerned in WA, if you are 400m offshore (according to the water police) you require PFD type 1 (inflatable is fine) and a flare. The local police are really practical with this. It isn't about surfing, but if you are downwinding and 1-2km offshore, they may come and tap you on the shoulder if you don't have the right safety equipment.

Water sports having always been about sharing the asset and looking out for each other. Just have fun

Great way to kill your business Tony. I'm sure Mr Naish would be stoked with this kind of publicity from one of his dealers as well as the kiting community who SUP. Is there a need for other sports at the moment to come and bag out the SUP forum or just stir siht for no reason. Do we want physical activity in whatever form it is to grow? All that has to be said is go ride some waves, catch some fish or wind and enjoy life.

On a happy note how good was the Hawaii race today? and did anyone catch some waves or go for a down wind run post your stoke here

Hey I'm really into this whole right of way thing, particularly cry babies who continually try to make SUP surfers give them all the waves. So, how about this scenario. If a guy ties his sup to the top of his car and gets one of his kids to stand on it while he drives down the road and he comes to a blind nun carrying a white goat, who has right of way?
