Why would you take a lovely board like that and then dress it up like a hyperactive tart's boudoir?
I guess it's a matter of personal preference, but to my eyes the JP graphics look like someone is trying to induce an epileptic fit in a susceptible relative they don't like. As with Starboard's graphics, I know of several people who would not buy the brand on the grounds of the graphics alone, and no-one who sees them as an asset. This seems an incredible own goal for a brand. Boards like this are not often bought by teenagers who want to paddle at night.
But no doubt there are many people who love these graphics. So it would be good to hear your point of view.
I'm surprised there is not more discussion on the forums about the graphics of boards since many retailers near me say the two most important variables in the majority of sales are cost and looks (in that order). No-one wants to spend $$$$$ on something they find repulsive to look at.
I'm a bit worried you are channelling my thoughts, or I'm channelling yours.
When I first walked in to the shop to buy my first board (2 years ago, give or take), I was showed Naish, Fanatic, Starboard.
Eliminated Starboard on the spot because I thought they looked crappy.
Was that meant to be a Space Invader or what? Still don't consider them, mainly on graphics. I don't have to be right - it's my money.
Bought Fanatic, surprisingly based on suitability of the board for a 52 year old beginner, liked the graphics (2013), lairy enough but OK for a FOB.
Moving on, the older Naish all white, or white / yellow, then yellow with a bit of black look classy. Last couple of years way too busy.
They no longer make the boards I am interested in, so not an issue, but would not spend my money on something that looks like what they are producing.
Unless they make a 17' LE.
I like the older SIC colour fades, really classy gloss finished boards, but the new ones are OK.
But as the owner of a 14' V2, I suspect black is a dumb colour for a paddleboard that gets left in the sun.
The reds may be better but don't seem to make it to Australia.
Fanatic has slipped from view - hated the bull terrier look boards, and not a fan of fake sanded carbon, interest moved on.
My biggest minus for inflatables is the lack of options for graphics, unattractive look, although I have a Nisco thing, could not get excited about a vinyl thing.
The way my paddling has developed, I'm probably moving to customs, and one of the many attractions is designing my own colours / graphics.
But love my second hand SIC 12'6" Bullet, classy looking board must be five years old, has retained its' appearance I think due to quality manufacture and simple graphics. Second hand 17'4" Bullet still delights, classy look, I think 4 years old and looks as new. No overdone signwriting, just pure class in its' finish.
On a finger count, I have bought 5 boards this year (all second hand), and appearance has played a major part in each purchase.
From the photo, I wouldn't buy that. Got no susceptible relatives.
